PRODUCTION OF SYNTHESIS GAS FROM BIOMASS- DATA FINAL GATHERING PROGRAMME.

Objective

THE PRESENT PROJECT CONCERNS THE EXECUTION OF OPERATING TESTS ON THE PLANT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SYNTHESIS GAS FROM BIOMASS BUILT IN 1985 IN SULMONA (ITALY) IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE PROGRAMME "METHANOL FROM WOOD". THE MAIN FEATURES OF THE PLANT ARE:

FLUID BED REACTOR WITH AN INERT MATERIAL AS FLUIDIZING MEDIUM, INDIRECT HEATING SYSTEM VIA AN ANULAR CHAMBER AROUND THE REACTOR VOLUME, FEED RATE OF 500 KG/HR OF BIOMASS (DRY BASIS), STEAM BIOMASS RATIO 0,5, GASIFIER FLUID BED TEMPERATURE 730 CELSIUS DEGREES, SYNTHESIS GAS PRODUCED 540 KG/HR.

THE BIOMASS IS GASIFIED IN A FLUIDIZED BED: THE HEAT REQUIRED FOR THE GASIFICATION IS SUPPLIED INDIRECTLY THROUGH AN OUTER FLUID BED WHERE FLUE GASES, OBTAINED BY COMBUSTION WITH AIR OF PART OF THE GAS PRODUCED, ARE USED AS A FLUIDIZING MEDIUM.
PURE OXYGEN IS USED IN A SEPARATED CRACKING CHAMBER TO REFINE THE PRODUCED GAS BY ELIMINATING METHANE AND HEAVIER HYDROCARBONS. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT PROGRAMME IS NOW TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THE GASIFICATION PROCESS USED IN THE PLANT PROVIDES A LARGE IMPROVEMENT OVER THE OXYGEN BLOWN SYSTEM FOR A MEDIUM HEATING VALUE GAS PRODUCTION FROM BIOMASSES. THE PREVIOUS GASIFICATION EXPERIMENTS SHOWED THE PLANT CAN WORK SATISFACTORY PROVIDED THAT SOME MODIFICATIONS ARE INTRODUCED TO IMPROVE THE PLANT PERFORMANCE AND OPERATION.
AT PRESENT, THE MODIFICATIONS CARRIED OUT ARE:
- REPLACING THE ORIGINAL POROUS ALLUMINA PARTICLES BY SOLID ONES AND INCREASING THE SIZE;
- MODIFYING THE DESIGN AND ARRANGEMENT OF REACTOR INTERNALS TO AVOID THERMAL EXPANSION PROBLEMS;
- CHANGING THE ORIGINAL SYNGAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM BY FANS WITH A STEAM-EJECTOR STATION;
- IMPROVEMENT OF INSTRUMENTATION AND AUTOMATIC CONTROL SYSTEM TO GET A MORE SMOOTH OPERATION.
