Objective
THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EARLY SCREENING METHOD FOR IDENTIFYING POPLAR CLONES THAT CAN GIVEN A HIGH PRODUCTION OF WOOD, NOT NECESSARILY AS AN INDIVIDUAL TREE, BUT PER HA.
THIS REQUIRES, HOWEVER, ELUCIDATION OF THE WIDER QUESTION ON THE OCCASIONAL DIVERGENCE BETWEEN THE INDIVIDUAL TREE PRODUCTION OF A SPECIES AND ITS PRODUCTION PER HA, OR THE QUESTION : "WHY DOES THE FASTER GROWING SPECIES PRODUCE LESS?". (LARCH GROWS FASTER THAN SPRUCE, BUT PRODUCES CONSIDERABLY LESS PER HA). THE QUESTION IS IMPORTANT FOR TREE BREEDERS IN GENERAL, WHO TEND TO BASE A FIRST EVALUATION OF A SELECTED GENOTYPEE ON ITS INDIVIDUAL HEIGHT GROWTH, AND FOR POPLAR BREEDERS IN PARTICULAR WHO HANDLE HYBRID CLONES OF VERY DIVERSE GENETIC BACKGROUND.
THE ANSWER, ACCORDING TO OUR WORKING HYPOTHESIS, IS NOT INDEPENDENT OF THE SHADE TOLERANCE OF THE CLONE OR SPECIES, OR, MORE EXACTLY, OF ITS ABILITY TO PRODUCE IN CONDITIONS OF REDUCED LIGHT INTENSITY. THEREFORE, A RANGE OF SPECIES AND OF POPLAR CLONES IS TO BE GROWN IN THREE DIFFERENT LIGHT REGIMES IN THE NURSERY, TO FIND OUT HOW MUCH THEIR GROWTH IS REDUCED BY SHADING. THE FIRST TRIAL RESULTS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN AUTUMN 1987.
