Objective
Poplar appears to be a rather shade intolerant species. However poplar leaves apparently have some capacity to adapt their photosynthetic performance to the light environment. This capacity varies from one clone to another indicating genetic variation in Populus for adaptation to shade. The differences between clones observed with the low light growing experiment are much less pronounced than those measured under other environmental stresses such as water and temperature stresses. These nondestructive measurements of stress induced changes in the in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence and photoacoustic signals are shown to be suitable for the development of rapid large scale screening tests for stress tolerance in forest plants.
THIS PROGRAMME COMPRISED THE ESTABLISHMENT ON BIOCHEMICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL BASIS OF SPECIFIC SCREENING TESTS FOR THE RAPID EVALUATION OF PLANTS CONDITIONS AND IMPORTANT GENETICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL TRAITS RELATED TO BIOMASS PRODUCTION. POPLAR CLONES WERE SELECTED ACCORDING TO THEIR GROWTH RATE. FOLIAGE STRUCTURE AND LEAF AREA DURATION. TEST CLONES WERE GROWN AS CUTTING IN A .80M X .80M PLANTING PATTERN AS AFSNEE (R.U.GENT BELGIUM) AND MONTPELLIER (ENSA MONTPELLIER, FRANCE).
IN ADDITION, PLANT ALSO WERE GROWN AT BRUXELLES (LABORATOIRE DE PHYSIOLOGIE VEGETALE ULB) IN CONTAINERS UNDER A LARGE PLASTIC SHEETED ROOF.
THE MENSURATIONAL PARAMETERS HAVE BEEN EXAMINED AND COMPARED TO MEASUREMENTS ON THE SAME CLONES IN A FIFTEEN OLD POPLAR STAND. REFINEMENT OF THE CHLOROPHYLL FLUORESCENCE TECHNIC WAS CARRIED OUT FOR ITS APPLICATION TO POPLAR LEAVES. A SPECIFIC DATA CAPTURE SYSTEM HAS BEEN DEVELOPPED TO ANALYSE CLONE RESISTANCE TO ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSES. IN THIS REPORT, WE BEGAN TO ANALYSE DROUGHT RESISTANCE OF THE CLONES AS A PRELIMINARY TEST.
