Objective
THE PROJECT CALLED "SWEET SORGHUM (SORGHUM BICOLOR) AS AN ALCOHOLIC HILL CULTIVATION" IS DIVIDED INTO TWO SECTIONS: AGRONOMIC TESTS TO DETERMINE THE APPROPRIATE CULTIVATION TECHNIQUES OF SOME CULTIVARS OF AMERICAN ORIGIN; A GENETIC IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMME WHICH AIMS TO THE CONSTITUTION OF NEW VARIETIES, FITTER TO THE PEDOCLIMATIC ENVIRONMENT OF CENTRAL AND NORTHERN ITALY.
THE AGRONOMIC TESTS STUDY: SPACING DENSITY, LODGING CAUSES, IRRIGATION, SEEDING AND HARVESTING TIMES IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE HIGHEST YIELD OF CARBOHYDRATES.
IN 1986, A PROGRAMME STARTED FOR SELECTING AND OBTAINING PURE LINES FROM VARIOUS GERM PLASM OF DIFFERENT ORIGINS.
SELECTIONS ARE BASED ON:
- CAPABILITY IN PRODUCING HIGH QUANTITIES OF BIOMASS;
- HIGH SUGAR PERCENTAGE;
- RESISTENCE TO LODGING;
- INSENSITIVITY TO PHOTOPERIODS "FROM WHICH A HIGHER PRECOCITY COMES";
- RESISTENCE TO DISEASES;
- RESEARCH OF MALE-STERILITY.
AN ACCURATE WORK OF COLLECTING DATA ABOUT PHYTO-SANITARY STATUS OF GERM PLAST HAS POINTED OUT THE SENSITIVITY, NOTICED IN MANY VARIETIES, TO SCMU (SUGAR CANE MOSAIC VIRUS).
IN 1987, A TRIAL CONCERNING EXTRACTION AND STORAGE OF SUGAR JUICES WAS CONDUCTED ON A PILOT PLANT. THANKS TO THIS TEST, WE REALIZED THAT THE FIRST SQUEEZING GIVES ABOUT 50 % OF THE SUGAR CONTAINED IN THE STALK; THE SECOND SQUEEZING GIVES ABOUT 50 % OF SUGAR LEFT IN THE BAGASSE; THIS MEANS THAT ALL TOGETHER WE GET 75 % OF THE PRESENT CARBOHIDRATES.
FOR THE TOTAL EXHAUSTION THE BAGASSE WAS SENT TO A DIFFUSION PLANT WHERE IT WAS ONLY POSSIBLE TO ASCERTAIN THAT THE LIQUID HAD PERCOLATION DIFFICULTIES THROUGH THE BAGASSE LAYER. THE EXHAUSTED BAGASSE HAS BEEN ESSICCATED TO 10 % OF HUMIDITY; ITS COMBUSTIBILITY IS PERFECT AT THIS LEVEL OF HUMIDITY, WHEREAS ITS INFERIOR CALORIFIC POWER HAS BEEN MEASURED IN 4.100 K.CAL./KG. A THEORIC CALCULATION DEMONSTRATED THAT STARTING FROM A SPECIFIC AMOUNT OF FRESH RAW MATERIAL, ABOUT 50 % OF THE BAGASSE PRODUCED IS USED FOR ITS OWN ESSICCATION; OF THE REMAINING PART OF THIS ESSICCATION ONLY 50 % IS REQUIRED FOR THE WHOLE PROCESS OF THE ETHANOL PRODUCTION.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
