BIOMASS PRODUCTION FOR ENERGY PURPOSES FROM SHORT ROTATION CULTURE OF COPPICE CHESTNUT TREES IN MARGINAL LANDS IN ITALY.

Objective

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO USE MARGINAL HILL LAND (OF AN OVERALL SURFACE OF 35 HECTARES) WITH NATIVE FORESTRY ESSENCES IN ORDER TO PRODUCE BIOMASS.

THE ACTIVITY CARRIED OUT UP TO TODAY IS REPRESENTED BY THE BUSH CUTTING OF THE SPONTANEOUS VEGETATION, THE PREPARATION OF THE LAND AND THE SOWING OF CASTANEA SATIVA WITH MECHANIZED MEANS. HENCE ALL THE OPERATIONS WHETHER BUSH CUTTING OR PREPARARING THE LAND OR SOWING WERE CARRIED OUT MECHANICALLY WHICH BROUGHT ABOUT A GREAT SAVING BOTH IN TIME AND MONEY. AT THE PRESENT MOMENT, AFTER AN EXCELLENT EMERGENCE OF THE PLANTS WE ARE IN THE PERIOD OF THE GROWTH OF THE YOUNG PLANTS WHICH SHOW THEMSELVES IN THE RICOVERY OF THE VEGETATION WITH A GOOD DEVELOPMENT. THE HEIGHT OF THE PLANTS COMING FROM SEEDS PLANTED AT THE END OF JUNE-MID JULY 1985, IA ON AVERAGE ABOUT 90 CM. THE RESULTS OBTAINED CAN BE CONSIDERED EXCELLENT UP TO NOW WHETHER FROM THE VEGETATIVE OR ECONOMIC POINT OF VIEW, FOLLOWING THE PARTICULAR MECHANICAL TECHNIQUES EMPLOYED, WHETHER IN THE PREPARATION OF THE LAND, OR IN THE SOWING, OR FINALLY IN THE FOLLOWING CULTIVATION OPERATIONS. A PARTICULARLY POSITIVE FACT AND ONE TO EMPHASIZE (BEING THE ONLY EXPERIMENTATION IN ITALY IN THAT SENSE) IS THE RESULT OBTAINED WITH REGARD TO THE POSSIBILITY OF SOWING THE WOODY ESSENCES IN A COMPLETELY MECHANIZED WAY. WHICH BRING ABOUT, BESIDES A CONSISTENT SAVING OF TIME AND MONEY, A REGULARITY OF THE ORDER OF PLANTING, A UNIFORMITY IN THE EMERGENT PLANTS AND FINALLY A MORE RAPID GROWTH. AS WAS FORESEEN BY THE PROJECT THE FOLLOWING CULTIVATION OPERATIONS IN 1986 HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT ALMOST ENTIRELY WITH MECHANICAL MEANS (MANUAL WORK WAS CARRIED OUT ONLY ALONG THE ROWS) OBTAINING CONSEQUENTLY THE RESULT OF THE REDUCTION BOTH OF TIME AND OF COSTS.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
