Objective
- INCREASE THE BIOMASS RESOURCES OF THE REGIONE ABRUZZO THROUGH THE UTILISATION OF ENERGY CROPS IN MARGINAL LANDS (120.000 HA AVAILABLE),
- COST REDUCTION OF HARVESTING THE FORESTRY BIOMASS IN MARGINAL AND DIFFICULT LANDS.
1) ACTIVITY ON ENERGY CROPS :
THE RESEARCH EFFORTS OF THE ABRUZZO REGION (I) WILL CONTINUE ON THE BASIS OF AN OVERALL PROGRAMME, WHICH INVOLVES THE SELECTION OF SUPERIOR CLONES, THE CREATION OF CLONAL COLLECTIONS VIA GRAFTING OR CUTTINGS, IN VIVO REJUVENATION, MICROPROPAGATION AND, FINALLY, OUTPLANTING OF PLANTLETS OBTAINED IN VITRO IN EXPERIMENTAL FIELDS.
IN VIVO REJUVENATION WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY NUT-GRAFTING OR REPEATED GRAFTING ON JUVENILE PLANTS. A NEW METHOD SIMILAR TO THAT RECENTLY DEVELOPED BY THE WEYERHAEUSER COMPANY, TACOMA (WASHINGTON) INVOLVING THE SPRAYING OF DONOR PLANTS WITH CYTOKININS WILL ALSO BE TESTED.
MICROPROPAGATION STUDIES WILL CONTINUE ON ALL THOSE SPECIES WHICH HAVES THUS FAR SHOWN TO BE RECALCITRANT BY USING REJUVENATED MATERIAL.
PLANTLETS OBTAINED IN VITRO WILL AT FIRST BE OUTPLANTED IN A NURSERY TO DETERMINE THEIR BEHAVIOUR AND DISEASE RESISTANCE ANT TO COMPARE THEM, WHERE POSSIBLE, WITH SEEDLINGS AND ROOTED CUTTINGS OF THE SAME DONOR PLANT. IF MICROPROPAGATED PLANTS PASS THIS TEST AFTER A PERMANENCE IN CLIMATIZED GREEN HOUSES, EXPERIMENTAL FIELDS (SEVERAL TTENS OF HA) WILL BE SET UP, USING ASUFFICIENT NUMBER OF GENOTYPES TO AVOID THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE REDUCTION OF GENETIC VARIABILITY.
2) ACTIVITY ON FOREST BIOMASS HARVESTING :
AN IMPORTANT PROGRAMME OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE HARVESTING METHODOLOGY AND TECHNOLOGY FOR THE "BOSCO CEDUO" IS PROPOSED HERE. SUCH ACTIVITY WILL BE IN CONNECTION WITH THE LEBEN-PROJECT (LARGE EUROPEAN BIO ENERGY PROJECT) WHICH IS ALREADY IN IMPLEMENTATION IN THE ABRUZZO REGION OF ITALY.
THE HARVESTING PROGRAMME WILL BE SUBDIVIDED AS FOLLOWS :
- ANALYSIS OF THE STATE OF ART OF THE HARVESTING TECHNOLOGY SUITABLE FOR THE DIFFICULT MOUNTAIN AREAS OF CENTRAL AN SOUTHERN ITALY (APPENNINI) AND THE DEFINITION OF THE BEST METHODOLOGY OF HARVESTING;
- EXPERIMENTAL TESTING IN THE ABRUZZO REGION OF PROPERLY SELECTED MACHINES IN ORDER TO :
A)EVALUATE THE EFFICIENCY AND QUALITY OF THE HARVESTING TECHNOLOGY;
B) ASSESS THE METHODOLOGY ADOPTED FOR HARVESTING FOR SHORT DISTANCE TRANSPORTATION AND FOR STORAGE;
C) EVALUATE HARVESTING, TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE COST FOR THIS TYPE OF BIOMASS;
D) WORK OUT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE HARVESTING TECHNOLOGY FOR "BOSCO CEDUO" LOCATED IN DIFFICULT MARGINAL LANDS.
