Objective
THE PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT IS TO INVESTIGATED THE POSSIBILITY OF USING THE WATER SOLUBLE CARBOHYDRATE (WSC) COMPONENT OF ITALIAN RYEGRASS AS SUBSTRATE FOR FERMENTATION BY YEAST TO ETHANOL.
IN 1986 USE WAS MADE OF A SERIES OF SWARDS TO MEASURE WSC AND CRUDE PROTEIN (CP) PRODUCTION LEVELS. YIELDS EXCEEDING 5T HA TO THE POWER OF MINUS 1 Y TO THE POWER OF MINUS 1 OF WSC AND 1.9 T HA TO THE POWER OF MINUS 1 OF CP WERE REALISED. ABOUT 70% OF THE WSC WAS IN THE STEM WHEREAS 62% OF THE CP WAS IN THE LEAF.
SEQUENTIAL HARVESTING OF TOP AND BOTTOM GROWTH WAS ATTEMPTED TO OBTAIN ENRICHMENT OF CUTS IN EITHER CP OR WSC. THE HARVESTING OPERATION WORKED WELL BUT ENRICHMENT HAS NOT YET BEEN ACHIEVED. AN INITIAL EXPERIMENT INDICATED THAT HYDROLYSIS OF THE SUCROSE AND FRUCTAN CONSTITUENTS OCCURED IN JUICE FROM GRASS LEAF AND STEM.
REPLICATED SWARDS HAVE BEEN SOWN TO ITALIAN RYEGRASS (5 CULTIVARS), HYBRID ITALIAN RYEGRASS (2 CV), PERENNIAL RYEGRASS (3 EACH OF EARLY, MIDSEASON AND LATE HEADING CV), COCKFOOT (2 CV), AND TALL FESCUE (2 CV). AN ITALIAN RYEGRASS (CV MULTIMO) SWARD HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO ALLOW FOR THE EXAMINATION OF EFFECT OF TIME OF CUTTING AND NITROGEN FERTILISATION ON WSC LEVELS IN 1987.
TOTAL WSC PRODUCTION FROM DIFFERENT ESTABLISHED SWARDS OF ITALIAN RYEGRASS (3-4 REPLICATIONS) INDICATED THAT WSC PRODUCTION REACHED 5T HA TO THE POWER OF MINUS 1 Y TO THE POWER OF MINUS 1 WITH THE MAJOR PART OF WSC IN THE STEM.
