Objective
THIS PROJECT DEALS WITH THE APPLICATION OF THE PSYCHROPHILIC ANAEROBIC TREATMENT TO SEWAGE, ANIMAL AND AGROINDUSTRIAL WASTES. IF IS ATTEMPTED TO IMPROVE BIOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL METHODS TO ISOLATE, CHARACTERISE, AND QUANTIFY PSYCHROPHILIC METHANOGENIC MICROORGANISMS. INHIBITION AND ACCLIMATISATION STUDIES WILL BE CARRIED OUT. IT IS AIMED TO DEVELOP NEW NON-CONVENTIONAL INOCULA FOR SUCH PROCESSES. PERFORMANCE OF BOTH CONVENTIONAL AND HIGH-RATE DIGESTERS OPERATING AT LOW TEMPERATURES WILL BE EVALUATED. FINALLY, ENERGY BALANCES WILL BE CALCULATED IN ORDER TO DISCUSS THE PROSPECTS OF SUCH PROCESSES.
DURING THIS INITIAL PERIOD, MATERIALS, METHODS AND EXPERIMENTAL INSTALLATIONS HAVE BEEN SET UP. ANAEROBIC SLUDGE FROM A PIGGERY WASTES DIGESTER HAS BEEN ACLIMATISED AND IS BEING USED AS INOCULUM IN THE RANGE OF TEMPERATURES FROM 10 TO 25 DEGREES C. AND ADDITIONAL INOCULUM IS BEING DEVELOPED FROM SEA SEDIMENTS WITH AN ACTIVE METHANOGENIC ACTIVITY. ENRICHMENT STUDIES ARE BEING CARRIED OUT PREVIOUSLY TO ISOLATION. DIFFERENT SETS OF EXPERIMENTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT AT 25 DEGREES C. THEIR PERFORMANCE ARE INCLUDED. ANOTHER SET OF EXPERIMENTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT, WHERE DIGESTER TEMPERATURE EVOLVES WITH THE AMBIENT ONE, IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENT OF ALREADY EXISTING CONVENTIONAL PLANTS, WHICH ACTUALLY ARE BEING OPERATED IN THE MESOPHILIC RANGE OF TEMPERATURES.
PERFORMANCE OF PIGGERY WASTES ANAEROBIC TREATMENT AT 25 DEGREES C IS COMPARED WITH THE ONE OBTAINED AT CONVENTIONAL MESOPHILIC TEMPERATURE. HYDRAULIC RETENTION TIMES, RANGING FROM 8 TO 20 DAYS, HAVE BEEN APPLIED WITH ORGANIC LOADS UP TO 5,4 KG COD.M TO THE POWER OF MINUS 3 .DTO THE POWER OF MINUS 1, WITH INFLUENT TOTAL SOLIDS CONCENTRATION OF 40 AND 80 KG TS.M TO THE POWER OF MINUS 3 .D TO THE POWER OF MINUS 1. MAXIMUM GAS PRODUCTION RATES OF 0,5 AND 0,85 CUBIC METERS CH4.M TO THE POWER OF MINUS 3 .D TO THE POWER OF MINUS 1. HAVE BEEN RESPECTIVELY OBTAINED WITH SUCH SUBSTRATES. DEPURATION EFFICIENCIES, AS TS, VS OR COD REMOVAL, HAVE RANGED BETWEEN 36-28%, 27-17% AND 47-30%, RESPECTIVELY. IT REPRESENT A DECREASE IN METHANE PRODUCTION OF C.A. 20-25% IF COMPARED WITH THAT OBTAINED AT 37 DEGREES C, WHEN TREATING THE MORE CONCENTRATED SUBSTRATE.
