Objective
TWO LABORATORY-SCALE REACTORS HAVE BEEN COMMISSIONED FOR THE ANAEROBIC TREATMENT OF THE COOKING CONDENSATES, THE ALKALINE EFFLUENT AND THE CHLORINATION EFFLUENT OF A KRAFT MILL.
THE FIRST ONE IS AN UASB (UPFLOW ANAEROBIC SLUDGE BLANKET)OF 8 L ACTIVE CAPACITY AND THE SECOND AN ACFB (ACTIVATED CARBON FLUIDISED BED) OF 52 L TOTAL CAPACITY. THE LATTER CONTAINS FILTRASORB FS-400 AS AN ACTIVE CARRIER FOR THE BIOMASS. BOTH ARE OPERATED IN THE MESOPHILIC RANGE (35 CELSIUS DEGREES), AND HAVE BEEN SEEDED WITH A MIXTURE OF ACTIVELY DIGESTING MUNICIPAL SLUDGE, PRIMARY SLUDGE FROM THE MILL ITSELF, AND SLUDGE FROM AN EXPERIMENTAL THERMOPHILIC DIGESTER TREATING MUNICIPAL SOLID REFUSE.
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WASTEWATERS HAVE BEEN DETERMINED AND SHOW THAT THE COOKING CONDENSATES ARE THE MOST PROMISING WASTES FOR DIGESTION. THEY CONTAIN RELATIVELY FEW SUSPENDED SOLIDS, WITH A COD OF ABOUT 6.000 MGO2/L, MOST OF WHICH IS CAUSED BY METHANOL. THE CONCENTRATION IN OTHER POLLUTANTS SUCH AS ETHANOL, FURFURAL, VOLATILE FATTY ACIDS AND MERCAPTANS IS VERY SMALL. THE ALKALINE EXTRACTION EFFLUENT HAS MUCH LESS POTENTIAL FOR DIGESTION (COD =+/- 1.000 MGO2/L) BUT IS RELEASED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITIES.
AFTER A DELICATE START-UP PERIOD, BOTH REACTORS WERE CONSISTENTLY PRODUCING BIOGAS, AND THE LOADING RATES ARE NOW BEING INCREASED STEPWISE. THE PERFORMANCES OF THE ACFB ARE MUCH BETTER THAN THOSE OF THE UASB. COD REMOVALS CAN EXCEED 90 %, AND THE CLARITY OF THE TREATED WATER IS MUCH BETTER, EVEN FOR HIGHER LOADING RATES. A SERIOUS OPERATING PROBLEM IS THE FORMATION OF SCUMS OR FROTHS (ACCORDING TO THE ORIGIN OF THE WATER) WHEN NUMEROUS GAS BUBBLES ARE ESCAPING AT THE SURFACE.
AT THE INITIAL STAGE HOWEVER, THE REACTORS ARE STILL FAR FROM THEIR TECHNICAL OPTIMUM.
