AIR GASIFICATION OF BIOMASS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF LOW BTU GAS.

Objective

THE AIM OF THE PRESENT R AND D WORK IS TO STUDY THE AIR GASIFICATION OF LIGNOCELLULOSIC BIOMASS WASTES IN A FLUIDIZED BED REACTOR, FOR THE PRODUCTION OF LOW-BTU GAS.

THE REACTOR IS OPERATING ON THE AUTOTHERMAL MODE.
THE DIFFICULTY IS TO GENERATE A TAR + CARBON FREE GAS, SUITABLE FOR FEEDING KILNS OR BOILERS, AND WHICH CAN BE SUBSTITUTED TO IMPORTED ENERGIES SUCH AS FUEL-OIL OR NATURAL GAS.

THE EXPERIMENTAL FACILITY IS THE ATMOSPHERIC PILOT OF LE CREUSOT (CAPACITY 150 - 200 KG/H OF WOOD) ON WHICH HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY DEVELOPPED THE SYNGAS FROM WOOD PRODUCTION PROCESS, BY OXYGEN AND STEAM GASIFICATION, BETWEEN 1980 AND 1984.
PRELIMINARY TESTINGS WHICH HAD BEEN PERFORMED IN 1985 SHOWED THAT IT WAS NECESSARY TO EVALUATE THE PRODUCTION OF OIL AND TARS AND OF UNBURNT CARBON, IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO MAKE ACCURATE MATERIAL AND ENERGY BALANCES.
THE PILOTE HAS BEEN MODIFIED AND IS NOW READY FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM. THE NEW CONFIGURATION OF THE PILOT UNIT IS PRESENTED ON THE FOLLOWING FIGURE. THE MAIN MODIFICATION IS THE ADDITION OF A SECOND CYCLONE ON THE PILOT. THE FIRST CYCLONE ALLOWS TO RECYCLE THE UNBURNT CARBON AND THE SECOND ONE TO ELIMINATE FINE PARTICLES (ASHES).
