Objective
THE RESEARCH FOCUS IS DOUBLE:
- A BETTER THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE ON LYTIC ACTIVITIES (CELLULOLYSIS, LIPOLYSIS, PECTINOLYSIS...) BEFORE AND DURING ANAEROBIC DIGESTION.
-THE OPTIMIZATION OF THESE ACTIVITIES IN BIOGAS PLANTS (LARGE SCALE UNITS) TO OBTAIN BETTER YIELDS (METHANE PRODUCTION, POLLUTION REMOVAL EFFICIENCY).
THE METHODOLOGY CONSISTS IN:
- FONDAMENTAL STUDIES OF THE PROBLEMS DETECTED AT THE LEVEL OF THE HYDROLYTIC STEP OF ANAEROBIC DIGESTION IN BIOGAS PLANTS.
- USING THE "TRAPS" TECHNIC WHICH ALLOWS A COMPLETE FOLLOW UP OF THE HYDROLYSIS OF DIFFERENT ORGANIC WASTES IN STORAGE TANKS OF DIGESTERS.
PRIOR STUDIES ON THE ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF ANIMAL WASTES CARRIED OUT IN LABORATORY, PILOT AND INDUSTRIAL SCALE DIGESTERS SHOWED THE RESTRICTED DEGRADATION OF COMPLEX POLYMERS SUCH AS CELLULOSE AND HEMICELLULOSE DUE TO THE LIGNIN, COATING THESE MOLECULES IN PLANT MATERIAL.
AN EXPLANATION SEEMS TO BE THE LACK OF FILAMENTOUS GERMS (SUCH AS ACTINOMYCETES OR FUNGI) IN DIGESTERS, WHICH COULD ENSURE PERFORATIONS OF PLANT MATERIAL AND THE DEGRADATION OF LIGNIN.
THE SYSTEMATIC RESEARCH OF MICROORGANISMS IN DIGESTED PIGGERY WASTES LEADS TO SHOW THE PRESENCE OF FUNGAL STRAINS MORE OR LESS SPOILT.
OUR STUDIES TRY TO SEARCH FOR A VERY QUICK MYCOLYTIC FACTOR OCCURING IN ANAEROBIC DIGESTION. ULTRASTRUCTURAL OBSERVATIONS SHOW OFF THE BACTERIAL DEGRADATION OF THE FUNGUS DRESCHLERA SOROKINIANA, ENTRAPPED IN NYLON BAGS AND PUT INTO A DIGESTER .
AN EXPERIMENT, USING TRAPS OF CHITIN (WHICH IS THE MAIN AND VERY RESISTANT CONSTITUENT OF FUNGAL WALLS) PUT IN DIGESTED PIGGERY WASTES, HAS ALLOWED TO EVALUATE THE LOSS OF DRY WEIGHT OF CHITIN AFTER DIFFERENT INCUBATION TIMES: 1,0% AFTER 7 DAYS; 6,0% AFTER 21 DAYS; 8,5% AFTER 42 DAYS AND 12,6% AFTER 63 DAYS.
FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS AND MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSES COULD LEAD TO IMPROVE OUR KNOWLEDGE ON THE MYCOLYTIC MECHANISMS.
