Objective
MOLTEN ALKALI METAL SALTS HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE VERY EFFECTIVE CHEMICAL REACTION MEDIA FOR PYROLYSIS, GASIFICATION AND CATALYTIC CONVERSION OF ORGANIC CHEMICALS. BIOMASS AS SOFTWOOD HAS BEEN DISSOLVED IN SUCH MEDIA THEN CONVERTED AT HIGH YIELD INTO CLEAN FUEL GAS. THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME WILL INVOLVE THE DESIGN, OPERATION AND TECHNICO ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY STUDY OF A MOLTEN SALT PROCESS FOR THE CONVERSION OF SEVERAL TYPES OF BIOMASS INTO USEFUL FUEL GASES AND LIQUIDS.
A 2-LITRE BATCH REACTOR WILL BE DESIGNED AND OPERATED TO STUDY PROCESS PARAMETERS SUCH AS FEEDSTOCK, TEMPERATURE, KINETICS, SALT REGENERATION AND CATALYSIS, AND ENGINEERING PROBLEMS SUCH AS MATERIALS, HEATING, SEALING, CONTROL AND MECHANICAL HANDLING. POTENTIAL PRODUCTS ARE HYDROGEN AND HYDROCARBON GASES, LIQUID HYDROCARBONS, ALCOHOLS AND OTHER ORGANIC FUELS. THE RESULTANT CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL MODEL OF THE PROCESS WILL ENABLE THE DESIGN AND EVALUATION OF THE NEXT STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT AND A COMPARISON WITH OTHER BIOMASS PROCESSES.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
