Objective
THE AIM OF THE SUBMITTED PROJECT IS TO TEST THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT WATER AND NITROGEN SUPPLIES ON YIELD AND QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS OF JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE (HELIANTHUS TUBEROSUS). OF SPECIAL INTEREST IN THIS CONTEXT IS THE QUESTION IF THERE ARE GENOTYPES AMONG THE EUROPEAN JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE COLLECTION WHICH ARE HIGH YIELDING EVEN UNDER CONDITIONS OF LOW INPUT. SUCH GENOTYPES WERE MOST SUITABLE IN REDUCING THE COSTS FOR PROVIDING THE RAW MATERIAL WHEN PRODUCTION OF FRUCTOSE SYRUP OR ETHANOL FROM JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE TUBERS IS INTENDED.
FOR THE EXPERIMENT 10 GENOTYPES - 2 VARIETIES FROM FRANCE, HUNGARY, YUGOSLAVIA AND GERMANY AS WELL AS 2 BREEDING LINES OF THE INSTITUTE - SHALL BE TESTED DURING 2 YEARS (1988 AND 1989) IN BRAUNSCHWEIG-VOELKENRODE. THIS LOCATION IS MARKED BY A LIGHT SANDY SOIL AT WHICH IN MOST YEARS IRRIGATION IS NECESSARY FOR REACHING MAXIMUM YIELDS. HALF OF THE 10 GENOTYPES BELONG TO THE EARLY AND HALF TO THE LATE MATURITY GROUP. IN ADDITION TO THE DIFFERENT GENETIC MATERIAL FURTHER VARIANTS IN THE EXPERIMENT ARE:
- 2 LEVELS OF NITROGEN SUPPLY (70 AND 140 KG N/HA)
- 2 LEVELS OF WATER SUPPLY (WITH AND WITHOUT IRRIGATION)
- 2 HARVEST DATES (AUTUMN AND SPRING).
IN BOTH YEARS THE N-CONTENT OF THE SOIL IS DETERMINED BEFORE PLANTING AND AFTER HARVEST (N/MIN). IRRIGATION IS CONTINUED UNTIL HARVEST IN NOVEMBER FOR IT IS KNOWN FROM EXPERIENCE THAT ESPECIALLY LATE VARIETIES OFTEN HAVE A WATER DEFICIENCY IN THE LATE AUTUMN.
THE EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN IS CONSTRUCTED IN SUCH A WAY THAT EACH OF THE 4 COMBINATIONS OF NITROGEN (N1 AND N2) AND WATER SUPPLY (W1 AND W2) FORM A LARGE BLOCK. WITHIN THESE LARGE BLOCKS THE 10 GENOTYPES ARE PLANTED IN A FULLY RANDOMISED BLOCK DESIGN WITH 6 REPLICATIONS. THREE OF THESE REPLICATIONS ARE HARVESTED IN AUTUMN AND 3 IN SPRING. EACH PLOT OF ONE ROW WITH 20 PLANTS.
DURING VEGETATION PERIOD AND AFTER HARVEST THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERS WILL BE DETERMINED:
PLANT CHARACTERS:
- EARLY GROWTH
- STEM PER PLANT
- PLANT HEIGHT
- MATURITY
YIELD CHARACTERS
- TUBER YIELD (FRESH AND DRY MATTER)
- YIELD OF STEMS AND LEAVES (FRESH AND DRY MATTER)
- TUBER NUMBER
- TUBER FORM
- SIZE GRADING
CONTENTS
- FRUCTOSE CONTENT
- GLUCOSE CONTENT3 - FRUCTOSE/GLUCOSE RATIO
- N-CONTENT (IN TUBERS AND UPPEREARTH PLANT PARTS).
ALL CHEMICAL ANALYSES WILL BE PERFORMED WITH THE EQUIPMENT OF THE INSTITUTE ' S LABORATORY. THE STATISTICAL COMPUTATIONS WILL BE DONE IN THE CENTRAL DATA PROCESSING DEPARTMENT OF THE FEDERAL AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTRE USING AVAILABLE SOFTWARE PACKAGES.
