Phase 1 Interactive, graphics orientated techniques have been developed for integrated 3-dimensional interpretation of multiple geophysical datasets (multiparameter geophysical interpretation). Research concentrated on developing techniques for the analysis of gravity and magnetic data and its interpretation in conjunction with reflection seismic data and geological control (surface and borehole data). The analysis, correlation and modelling aspects of the problem were brought together into a single software environment. Functional requirements, practicalities and techniques for interactive multiparameter interpretation were addressed, hardware was procured and an outline design of the software package was developed. The practical development of modelling software on an Apollo DN590T workstation then took place. Finally, the prototype display and modelling environment was developed and refined into a more robust and useable software package which has been given the name MGIS-3D (multiparameter geophysical interpretation system). Phase 2 Since completion of phase 1, research has concentrated on the development of ultrafast calculation of the gravity and magnetic response of 3-dimensional geological structures represented as gridded surfaces. The software enables very rapid calculation, in the wave number domain, of large multilayered models and the display of the resulting fields. The package is curently implemented on a Silicon Graphics workstation. The next phase of development envisaged is the integration of the software with a seismic workstation for fully integrated fast 3-dimensional interpretation of gravity, magnetic and seismic datasets.
