Objective
TO MODIFY PETROL COMPOSITION BY ADDITION OF SUBSTITUTIVE FUEL COMPONENTS AND TO ASSESS THE EFFECT, WITH REGARD TO THE COMPONENT CHEMICAL STRUCTURE, ON THE EFFICIENCY AND POLLUTANT EMISSIONS OF AN S.I. ENGINE OPERATING AT BOTH STANDARD AND REALISTIC CONDITIONS.
IT IS PROPOSED TO STUDY THIS PROBLEM BY COMBINING THE EXPERTISE IN LIQUID FUELS AT THE NATIONAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, ATHENS, WITH THAT ENERGY AND COMBUSTION RESEARCH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD. THE WORK IN ATHENS INCLUDES PREPARATION OF MODEL FUELS, SYNTHESIS OF NOVEL ADDITIVES, OCTANE NUMBER MEASUREMENTS AND VARIABLE COMPRESSION RATIO MEASUREMENTS INCLUDING OCTANE NUMBER AND EXHAUST EMISSIONS AT THE CFR ENGINE. WORK BASED AT SHEFFIELD WILL INCLUDE THE ASSESSMENT OF THE VARIOUS FUEL COMPOSITIONS IN A STANDARD SI ENGINE OPERATING UNDER REALISTIC CONDITIONS; MEASURING COMBUSTION AND BRAKE THERMAL EFFICIENCY WITH FULL ANALYSIS OF EXHAUST GASES.
THE MAIN STAGES OF THE RD WORK IN ATHENS ARE:
1. MODEL FUEL PREPARATION:
A) BASE FUEL WHOSE COMPOSITION VARYING AS TO AROMATE AND DEFINITE CONTENT AND OTHER PARAMETERS SUCH AS METHYL GROUP CONCENTRATION AND RELATIVE POSITION, TYPE OF ALKANE CHAINS AND RINGS ETC...
B) CHECK OF FUEL ADDITIVE COMPONENTS AS ALCOHOL AND OTHER IN FUNCTION OF CONCENTRATION AND STRUCTURE.
2. SYNTHESIS OF NEW COMPONENTS.
3. OCTANE NUMBER MEASUREMENTS = RON AND MON MEASUREMENTS OF THE FUEL BLENDS WILL BE MADE.
4. VARIABLE COMPRESSION RATIO MEASUREMENTS - ASSESSMENT OF THE MODEL FUELS BY CHECKING THEIR BEHAVIOUR UNDER INCREASED COMPRESSION RATIO OPERATION ON CFR ENGINE.
