Objective
GIVEN THE CURRENT INTEREST IN THE COMMUNITY IN THE SAVINGS OF CRUDE OIL THROUGH THE USE OF SUBSTITUTE FUEL COMPONENTS IN PETROL (CT.OJ NO C96 11-4-83, P.1) IT IS IMPORTANT TO OBTAIN AN ACCURATE UNDERSTANDING OF THE EFFECTS OF THE SUBSTITUTE FUEL COMPONENTS ON ENGINE EFFICIENCY AND POLLUTION ABATEMENT.
THE MAJOR ANTICIPATED BENEFIT IS A MORE RATIONAL USE OF HIGH OCTANE FUEL COMPONENTS, COUPLED WITH A REDUCTION OF POLLUTANT EMISSIONS AND OPTIMIZATION OF ENGINE EFFICIENCY.
GIVEN THE HIGH EEC ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN SI ENGINES AND THEIR CURRENT PRODUCTION OF UNACCEPTABLY HIGH LEVELS OF POLLUTION, THE FINDING OF THIS STUDY WILL BE POTENTIALLY BOTH ECONOMICALLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY BENEFICIAL.
TO MODIFY PETROL COMPOSITION BY ADDITION OF SUBSTITUTE FUEL COMPONENTS AND TO ASSESS THE EFFECT, WITH REGARD TO THE COMPONENT CHEMICAL STRUCTURE, ON THE EFFICIENCY AND POLLUTANT EMISSIONS OF AN SI ENGINE OPERATING AT BOTH STANDARD ASTM AND REALISTIC CONDITIONS.
IT IS PROPOSED TO STUDY THIS PROBLEM BY COMBINING THE EXPERTISE IN LIQUID FUELS AT THE NATIONAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, ATHENS, WITH THAT IN ENERGY AND COMBUSTION RESEARCH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD.
THE MAIN PHASES OF THE JOINT PROJECT ARE AS FOLLOWS:
WORK BASED PRIMARILY IN ATHENS TO INCLUDE; MODEL FUEL PREPARATION; THE SYNTHESIS OF NOVEL FUEL COMPONENTS; OCTANE NUMBER MEASUREMENTS (RON AND MON); AND VARIABLE COMPRESSION RATIO MEASUREMENTS INCLUDING OCTANE NUMBER AND EXHAUST EMISSIONS. WORK BASED AT SHEFFIELD WILL INCLUDE THE ASSESSMENT OF THE VARIOUS FUEL COMPOSITIONS IN A STANDARD SI ENGINE OPERATING UNDER REALISTIC CONDITIONS; MEASURING COMBUSTION AND BRAKE THERMAL EFFICIENCY WITH FULL ANALYSIS OF EXHAUST GASES.
