EXPERIMENTAL STUDY, CHARACTERIZATION OF CATALYSTS AND MODELLING OF MOLTEN CARBONATE FUEL CELL WITH OR WITHOUT INTERNAL REFORMING.

Objective

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAMME IS TO DEVELOP A RELIABLE PREDICTION OF THE OVERALL PERFORMANCE AND THE EXPECTED ELECTROCHEMICAL AND THERMAL CHARACTERISTICS FOR SINGLE LARGE MOLTEN CARBONATE FUEL CELLS (MCFC) RUN WITH SIMULATED FUEL OR WITH INTERNALLY REFORMED (MCFC-IR) NATURAL GAS. PREDICTION WILL BE ASSISTED BY COMPARATIVE EXPERIMENTS PERFORMED ON TWO SMALL (100 CM2 EACH) ISOTHERMAL SINGLE CELLS (IGT) RUN RESP. AS IN THE MCFC AND THE MCFC-IR MODES. EXPERIMENTS WILL BE FINALIZED TO ALLOW FOR COMPARISON BETWEEN THE PREDICTED AND THE OBSERVED PERFORMANCE. AS IT COULD BE ANTICIPATED THAT LIFE OF MCFC INCREASES AT LOWER T, EMPHASIS WILL BE PUT INTO OPERATIONS AT LOWER THAN STANDARD T (600-650 CELSIUS DEGREES), TO SINGLE-OUT CONDITIONS WHICH WOULD ASSURE INCREASING DURABILITY WITH MINIMAL PENALTY IN THE POWER OUTPUT.

THE WORK PROGRAMME WILL CONSIST IN ESSENCE OF TWO PHASES. PHASE 3.1 WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY CNR-TAE IN COOPERATION WITH POLITECNICO OF MILANO. PHASE 3.2 WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN COLLABORATION BETWEEN CNR-TAE AND THE UNIVERSITY P&M CURIE (ORSAY).

1.1 EXPERIMENTAL WORK.
EXPERIMENTS WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TWO ALREADY EXISTING MCFC TEST FACILITIES, RUN IN PARALLEL (ONE FOR MCFC AND THE OTHER MCFC-IR). AFTER FULL CHARACTERIZATION, CATALYSTS WILL BE TESTED THROUGH EXTENDED RUNS OUT-OF-THE CELL AND IN CELL CONDITIONS AS REFERRED TO EITHER KINETIC (II) AND ELECTROCHEMICAL (III) MEASUREMENTS. IN PARTICULAR, EMPHASIS WILL BE PUT INTO AN EXAMINATION OF THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS:
I) PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF CATALYSTS.
II) KINETICS OF STEAM REFORMING OF CH4.
III) ELECTROCHEMICAL PERFORMANCE MEASURED IN TWO ISOTHERMAL SINGLE CELLS RUN RESP. AS IN THE MCFC AN IR-MCFC MODES (MESSINA). THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS WILL BE INVESTIGATED:

- 1. MCFC: ENDURANCE AND PERFORMANCE TESTS AT P=1 ATM, FOR T FROM 600 CELSIUS DEGREES TO 650 CELSIUS DEGREES, USING A SIMULATED FUEL COMPOSITION.

2. IR-MCFC: PERFORMANCE TESTS, AT P=1 ATM, FOR T FROM 600 CELSIUS DEGREES TO 650 CELSIUS DEGREES, WITH A NON-PREEQUILIBRATED FUEL COMPOSITION, IE A CH4-STEAM MIXTURE.

PLOTS OF CURRENT-VOLTAGE WILL BE CONSTRUCTED AND THE INFORMATION COMPARED WITH THE THEORETICALLY ESTIMATED VALUES.

1.2. THEORETICAL WORK
WORK ALONG THESE LINES WILL BE BROKEN INTO TWO PARTS: MODELIZATION AND NUMERICAL SOLUTION USING A FINITE DIFFERENCES METHOD.
THE RESULTS OF THE NUMERICAL MODEL WILL BE VALIDATED BY THE EXPERIMENTS PERFORMED IN MESSINA, TO SHOW, IN CASE OF SMALL (ISOTHERMAL) CELLS, THE CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN THE ESTIMATED AND THE MEASURED ELECTROCHEMICALLY PROPERTIES.
AFTER THIS VALIDATION, A SENSITIVITY STUDY OF THE MODEL WILL BE UNDERTAKEN. IN THIS SENSITIVITY TEST, THE INFLUENCE OF THE INTERNAL REFORMING AS WELL AS OF OPERATING PARAMETERS WILL BE STUDIED, TO MAKE, IN CASE OF LARGE (NON ISOTHERMAL) CELLS, A MAP OF THE CURRENT AND TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION EXPECTED ALONG THE PLATE, AS A FUNCTION OF THE IMPOSED FEED (WITH OR WITHOUT INTERNAL REFORMING) AND OTHER CONDITIONS. EMPHASIS WILL BE PUT IN LOCATING CONDITIONS WHICH WOULD ASSURE MINIMUM T GRADIENTS AND THUS LONGER LIFE EXPECTANCY.
