TURBULENT COMBUSTION AND DIAGNOSTICS

Objective

A) TO COORDINATE RESEARCH IN THE AREA OF TURBULENT COMBUSTION AND DIAGNOSTIC DEVELOPMENT, SPECIFIC AREAS TO COVER THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF FLAMES, TURBULENT COMBUSTION MODELLING AND MEASUREMENTS, STANDARDIZATION OF CARS THERMOMETRY AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED OPTICAL METHODS FOR USE IN HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEMS SUCH AS INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES.

B) TO PERFORM STANDARD CARS MEASUREMENTS TO ASSESS AVERAGE AND INSTANTANEOUS CARS NITROGEN THERMOMETRY. TO DEVELOP CARS AND HIGH PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS FOR I.E. ENGINES, GAS TURBINES AND OTHER HIGH PRESSURE COMBUSTION TECHNIQUES SUCH AS PAMS (PREOSECOND ABSORPTION MODULATION SPECTROSCOPY).

A) THE ACTIVITIES COORDINATED IN THE PROGRAMME FALL UNDER FOLLOWING HEADING :
1. STRAINED FLAME LIBRARY : DEFINITION AND COLLECTION IN A LIBRARY OF CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF VARIOUS FLAMES
2. TURBULENT COMBUSTION MODELLING. PREMIXED AND DIFFUSION TURBULENT FLAME.
3. STANDARDIZATION OF CARS THERMOMETRY AND SPECIES CONCENTRATION MEASUREMENTS. TO DEFINE THE PRECISION AND ACCURACY OF CARS MEASUREMENTS FOR THERMOMETRY AND SPECIES CONCENTRATION FOR VARIOUS FLAME TYPE.
4. DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED OPTICAL DIAGNOSTIC FOR MEASUREMENTS OF HIGH PRESSURE (ABOVE 1 BAR)
COORDINATION IS TECHNICALLY AIDED BY A TECHNICAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE WHICH , WITH THE HELP OF THE BEST EXPERTS IN THE VARIOUS TECHNICAL AREAS ARE AVAILABLE TO ADVISE ON THE DIRECTION AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE RESEARCH. THIS WILL ALSO PERMIT LIAISON BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT AREAS IN THE COORDINATION FURTHER LINK TO OTHER COORDINATION AREA "KINETICS" EN3E009600-UK AS WELL AS TO THE DAIMLER BENZ PROGRAMME (CONTRACT EN3E005600-D). IMPROVED OTTO CYCLE BY ENHANCING THE FINAL COMBUSTION PHASE.

- STANDARDIZATION OF CARS THERMOMETRY AND SPECIES CONCENTRATION MEASUREMENTS ON ALL TYPE OF BURNERS AND EXCHANGE OF BURNERS (HARWELL, LEEDS, ONERA, HEIDELBERG AND DFVLR). EVALUATION OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED.
- DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED OPTICAL DIAGNOSTICS FOR MEASUREMENTS AT HIGH PRESSURE. FUNDAMENTAL CARS THEORY. CALCULATION FOR MOLECULAR ROTATIONAL RELAXATION RATES. IMPROVING ACCURACY OF CARS AT HIGH PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE BY BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF MOLECULAR COLLISIONAL RELAXATION PROCESSES. COLLECTION OF DATA AT MEDIA AND HIGH TEMPERATURE (HARWELL, DFVLR, DAIMLER BENZ)
- DEVELOPMENT OF PAMS TECHNIQUE. NEW TECHNIQUE FOR ULTRA HIGH SENSITIVITY SPECIES CONCENTRATION MEASUREMENTS OF PARTICULARLY OH AND ULTIMATELY HYDROCARBONS:
* DETERMINATION OF SENSITIVITY ON LABORATORY FLAME, SPATIAL RESOLUTION AND DATA RATE.
* ADAPTATION, IF SUCCESFUL TO HYDROCARBON USING UV WAVE LENGTH OR ENTENDING TO INFRARED.
