Objective
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE WORK ARE TO OBTAIN AND ASSESS THE VIEWS OF INDUSTRY ON FUTURE REQUIREMENTS FOR STRATEGIC R&D IN SUPPORT OF THE EFFICIENT USE OF ENERGY AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR POLLUTION ABATEMENT IN THE PROCESS INDUSTRIES WITHIN EUROPE, AND HENCE TO SUGGEST PRIORITY AREAS FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION.
The primary energy consumption of industry in the European Community is more than 40% of the Community's total primary energy consumption. The process industries account for 75% of this amount. Among the process industries, the largest energy consumers are the steel and chemicals industries.
Strategic research and development related to improving process industry energy efficiency should lie in the following areas:
alternative or improved unit operations and reaction routes, including advanced flow modelling where appropriate;
energy and process systems models;
sensors, instrumentation and controls.
THE WORK WILL CONSIST OF:
(A) VISITING COMPAGNIES AND FEDERATIONS TO INTERVIEW SENIOR MANAGERS AND OBTAIN THEIR VIEWS OF THE ABOVE TOPIC;
(B) PREPARING A REPORT SUMMARIZING AND ASSESSING THE VIEWS OBTAINED THROUGH THE INTERVIEWS AND RECOMMANDING AREAS OF STRATEGIC R&D FOR DETAILED INVESTIGATION. THE WRITTEN RECORDS OF THE INTERVIEWS WILL BE INCLUDED AS AN APPENDIX TO THE REPORT.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
