Objective
THE AIM IS TO DEVELOP A FLUIDIZATION GRID WHICH WILL ENABLE POTENTIAL USERS TO TREAT PRODUCTS OF LARGE PARTICLE SIZE, WHILE KEEPING INVESTMENT AND OPERATING COSTS LOW. THUS, THE GRID SHOULD OPERATE WITH A LOW PRESSURE DROP, AND THE RESUMPTION OF FLUIDIZATION SHOULD BE POSSIBLE USING A BLOWER OF THE SIZE DESIGNED FOR NOMINAL OPERATION WITH A MINIMUM OF ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT. WHEN USED WITH BOILERS, ACCOUNT WOULD ALSO HAVE TO BE TAKENOF THE LOCATION OF THE TUBES INSIDE THE BED TO KEEP CORROSION TO A MINIMUM AND ENSURE EFFICIENT HEAT EXCHANGE.
MOST FLUIDIZATION GRIDS TEND TO BE UNSUITED TO USE WITH PRODUCTS OF LARGE PARTICLE SIZE OR WITH A HIGH ASH CONTENT, WITH THE RESULT THAT MOST FLUIDIZED BED PROCESSES INVOLVE SELECTIVE REMOVAL OF BED MATERIAL IN ORDER TO KEEP THE DENSE ZONE IN THE REQUIRED OPERATING CONDITION.
THE PROPOSED PROGRAMME IS TO DETERMINE THE FLUIDIZATION PROPERTIES OF PRODUCTS WITH A HIGH ASH CONTENT OR OF LARGE PARTICLE SIZE BY MEANS OF A VERTICAL INJECTION GRID WITHOUT DEAD ZONES, PERMITTING SIMPLIFIED PROCESSING OF THESE UNWANTED PRODUCTS. THE RESULTS OF THIS WORK MAY LEAD TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MORE VERSATILE GRID THAN THE TRADITIONAL TYPES AND SIMPLER EVACUATION SYSTEMS. IT MAY THEN BE USED IN INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS SUCH AS THE DENSE-FLUIDIZED-BED PROJECTS CONDUCTED IN COLLABORATION WITH LARDET BABCOCK, A BOILER DESIGNER WORKING UNDER CERCHAR LICENCE.
