Objective
THE WORK WILL DEAL WITH THE VARIOUS QUALITIES OF SLURRY WHICH ARE REGARDED AS DIFFICULT TO PURIFY BY MEANS OF FLOTATION, THE MOST COMMON TECHNIQUE USED IN THIS FIELD.
THE ADVANTAGES EXPECTED INCLUDE OPENING UP MORE OUTLETS FOR BY-PRODUCTS WHICH ARE NOT READILY EXPLOITABLE, AND IMPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION.
THE RESULTS SHOULD PERMIT AN ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT SUFFICIENTLY ACCURATE TO GUIDE DECISIONS ON INVESTMENT.
RESEARCHERS IN SEVERAL COUNTRIES ARE STUDYING THE TREATMENT OF AQUEOUS SLURRY FROM WASHERIES CONTAINING FINE PARTICLES OF HIGH-ASH LOW-GRADE PRODUCTS BUT BECAUSE OF THE TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES AND THE VERY SPECIFIC PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED, THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED IS VERY FRAGMENTED AND NO GENERAL PRINCIPLES HAVE EMERGED.
THE PROBLEM OF SLURRY TREATMENT IS INCREASING IN IMPORTANCE SINCE THE PROPORTION OBTAINED FROM RAW COAL IS INCREASING, WHILE THE TRADITIONAL OUTLET FOR THIS PRODUCT, I.E. ELECTRICITY GENERATION, IS DIMINISHING SUBSTANTIALLY, AT LEAST IN FRANCE. THE SEARCH FOR NEW USES INEVITABLY ENTAILS BETTER PURIFICATION OF THESE PRODUCTS. THE AIM OF THE PROPOSED STUDY IS TO DISCOVER WAYS OF IMPROVING THE TREATMENT AND FINAL USE OF SLURRIES FROM VARIOUS SOURCES WHICH ARE GENERALLY REGARDED AS DIFFICULT TO PURIFY BY TRADITIONAL METHODS (PRINCIPALLY FLOTATION). PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE IMPLICATION OF THESE TREATMENTS FOR EXCLUSIVELY WET PROCESSING OF HIGH-QUALITY COAL/WATER MIXTURES BASED ON PURIFIED PRODUCTS.
