Objective THE AIM OF THE PROPOSED R&D WORK IS A " PROOF OF CONCEPT " OF A CLOSED-LOOP-CONTROLLED INTEGRATED HIGH-TEMPERATURE GAS CLEANING SYSTEM ON A " SUB-PILOT " SCALE IN THE OFFTAKE OF AN EXISTING PRESSURIZED FLUIDIZED BED FURNACE.TO ACHIEVE THIS AIM, THE FOLLOWING SUB-SYSTEMS ARE TO BE DEVELOPED:- RELIABLE ON-LINE MEASURING INSTRUMENTS TO CHARACTERIZE THE HOT GAS FLOWS PRODUCED BY THE COMBUSTION OR GASIFICATION OF COAL (SOLID AND GASEOUS COMPONENTS) AND WHICH MAY BE USED FOR DETERMINING AND DIRECTLY FOLLOWING THE FUNCTIONING OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE GAS CLEANING SYSTEMS;- AN ADJUSTABLE HIGH-TEMPERATURE GAS CLEANING SYSTEM. PELLET BED FILTRATION IS CURRENTLY CONSIDERED TO BE THE MOST PROMISING METHOD BECAUSE THE COMPOSITION OF THE BED MATERIAL MAY BE VARIED RELATIVELY EASILY AND ITS OPERATION CAN BE INFLUENCED BY MEANS OF ELECTROSTATIC EFFECTS;- A SYSTEM TO CONTROL THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE FILTER SO AS TO ENSURE THE OPTIMUM FUNCTIONING OF THE PROCESS AS A WHOLE IN VARYING OPERATING CONDITIONS (ELECTROSTATIC EFFECTS, REGULATION OF GAS FLOWS USING "FLUIDICS").
