Objective
MICROBIAL COAL DESULPHURIZATION GAINS INCREASING ATTENTION, ESPECIALLY FOR COAL TYPES OR FRACTIONS DIFFICULT TO CLEAN BY CONVENTIONAL MECHANICAL METHODS. BERGBAU-FORSCHUNG GMBH, F.R.GERMANY AND TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF DELFT, NETHERLANDS, ELABORATED, IDEPENDENTLY FROM EACH OTHER, TWO SIMILAR BASIC PROCESSES FOR THE BACTERIAL PYRITE REMOVAL FROM COAL. GREAT EXPERTISE ON MICROBES, PHYSIOLOGY, CULTIVATION, REACTOR DESIGN, INSTRUMENTATION, COAL ANALYSIS ETC. IS ASSEMBLED IN BOTH INSTITUTES.
MAIN OBJECTIVE OF A COOPERATIVE RESEARCH PROGRAMME, IS TO COMPLEMENT THE EXPERTISE OF THE TWO EUROPEAN PARTNERS TO EVALUATE DATA FOR A LATER TECHNICAL PROCESS AND A REALISTIC FEASIBILITY AND COST ESTIMATE. TO INCLUDE ALSO THE INTERESTS OF OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES IT SEEMS NECESSARY TO EXAMINE A WIDE RANGE OF COALS FROM THE DEPOSITS OF THE DIFFERENT EC-COUNTRIES TO GAIN INSIGHT OF THE APPLICABILITY OF THE MICROBIAL PROCESS TO THEM. THIS EXAMINATION WILL, AT THE SAME TIME, AIM AT A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE PROCESS ON COAL CHARACTERISTICS AND QUALITY.
COMPARED WITH KNOWN MICROBIOLOGICAL PROCESSES, LIKE PENICILLIN OR VITAMIN PRODUCTION, THE MICROBIAL COAL DESULPHURIZATION PROCESS HAS TO CLEAN AN PRODUCT ON A VERY LOW COST BASE. ALSO A VERY LARGE VOLUME OF MILLIONS OF TONS HAS TO BE TREATED IN AN ECONOMICAL WAY AND AN ACCEPTABLE TIME.ALSO LARGE VOLUME PROCESSES OF BIOLOGICAL WASTE WATER TREATMENT ARE NOT COMPARABLE TO THIS PROCESS BECAUSE THEIR AIM IS THE DESTRUCTION OF DESOLVED SUBSTRATES IN POLLUTED WATER, WHICH AFTERWARDS HAS NOT TO BE SOLD AS A PRODUCT. UNTER THESE ASPECTS THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE EXPECTED RESULTS DIFFER IN MANY WAYS FROM THOSE OF THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY, UP TO NOW THE MOST IMPORTANT USER OF MICROBIAL PROCESSES.
ON THE OTHER HAND IF THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL GENERATE A MICROBIOLOGICAL PROCESS AT ACCEPTABLE COSTS THE POTENTIAL BENEFIT WILL NOT ONLY BE FOR THE COAL AND ENERGY INDUSTRY, BUT ALSO FOR THE EUROPEAN POPULATION BY REDUCTION OF ACIDIC RAIN, AIR POLLUTION AND SOIL CONTAMINATION.
