Objective
THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CONTROL SYSTEM FOR THE NOVEL, AUTOMATIC, VARIABLE-OUTPUT PELLET BOILER WHICH IS THE SUBJECT OF CONTRACT NR.EN3F/0025 WITH THE OBJECTIVE TO DEVELOP A TOTALLY NEW TYPE OF BOILER IN WHICH THE COMBUSTION OF PELLETED FUELS WITH A HIGH VOLATILE CONTENT IS VERY TIGHTLY CONTROLLED. THIS NEW TYPE OF BOILER REQUIRES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A UNIQUE CONTROL SYSTEM FOR ITS OPERATION. THE PROPOSERS EXPECT TO USE THE FINDINGS FROM THE PROPOSED INVESTIGATION FOR THE IMMEDIATE DEVELOPMENT OF A CONTROL SYSTEM OF THE BOILER UNDER DEVELOPMENT. HOWEVER, THE SAME FINDINGS WILL OBVIOUSLY BE THE BASIS OF THE DESIGN OF THE CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR BOTH LARGE AND SMALL MODELS OF THIS NEW BOILER TYPE.
EXPECTED RESULTS WILL CONSIST OF :
(1) A MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF THE SYSTEM;
(2) OPTIMIZED RESPONSES TO DISTURBANCES AND INPUT CHANGES;
(3) CONTROL STRUCTURE AND PARAMETERS TO ACHIEVE THESE RESPONSES;
(4) DESIGN OF THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE TO IMPLEMENT THE ABOVE.
SIMPLE CONTROL SYSTEMS OPERATE OIL-FIRED AND HOPPER-FED ANTHRACITE SYSTEMS QUITE SATISFACTORILY. THE PROPOSERS ARE CONFIDENT THAT THE CONTROL SYSTEM WHICH THEY ENVISAGE CAN BE DESIGNED AND BUILT. THE QUESTION IS, HOW WELL IT WILL OPERATE, INCORPORATING THE BEST FEATURES OF BOTH THE EXISTING CONTROL SCHEMES.
