Objective
THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO PROVIDE AN INSIGHT INTO THE NATURE, COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF FLY ASH ORIGINATING FROM THE COMBUSTION OF COAL IN FLUIDIZED BED COMBUSTORS.
THIS SHOULD MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO DEFINE BETTER THE POSSIBLE ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS CONNECTED WITH THE UTILIZATION AND TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT DISPOSAL OF THIS TYPE OF ASH AS WELL AS TO DEVELOP TESTS FOR SIMPLE CHARACTERISATION OF THIS TYPE OF ASH.
Large scale lysimeters are used to characterise the leachability of fluidised bed combustion residues which may be disposed of by dumping. This method is realistic. Pollution is lower than predicted by laboratory tests.
ALTHOUGH THERE EXISTS A SUBSTANTIAL BODY OF INFORMATION CONCERNING ALL ASPECTS OF FLY ASH FROM CONVENTIONAL POWER PLANTS, THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE NATURE, PROPERTIES AND COMPOSITION OF FLY ASH ORIGINATING FROM FLUIDIZED BED COMBUSTORS (FBC) BURNING COAL IS STILL SCARCE AND FRAGMENTARY.
RECENT LIMITED RESEARCH HAS CONCENTRATED MAINLY ON EMISSIONS OF FINE PARTICLES. PROBLEMS AND HAZARDS CONNECTED WITH THE LEACHING BEHAVIOUR OF THE CAPTURED FLY ASH, DISPOSED EITHER PERMANENTLY OR TEMPORARILY HAVE SO FAR BEEN LESS STUDIED. IT MAY BE REASONABLY EXPECTED THAT THE RESULTS OF SUCH A COMPREHENSIVE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE FBC FLY ASH AS PROPOSED IN THIS RESEARCH WILL HELP TO DEFINE THE POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS CONNECTED WITH ITS PERMANENT OR TEMPORARY DISPOSAL AND WILL INDICATE WAYS AND MEANS TO AVOID THESE HAZARDS. THE RESULTS WILL ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO THE SOLUTION OF PROBLEMS RELATING TO THE UTILIZATION OF THIS TYPE OF FLY ASH.
