Objective
THE PROPOSED PROJECT AIMS AT EXPERIMENTAL FINALIZATION AND PRACTICAL EVALUATION OF A NOVEL METHOD FOR COAL CHARACTERIZATION BY MEASUREMENTS OF THE REACTIVITY OF THE RESIDUAL CHAR FROM PYROLYSIS AS A FUNCTION OF PYROLYSIS CONDITIONS.
COAL CHARACTERIZATION IS NEEDED FOR SEVERAL REASONS, BUT WITH REGARD TO BURNING CHARACTERISTICS OF A COAL SHIPMENT THE PRESENT METHODS IN GENERAL USE DO NOT APPEAR TO GIVE SUFFICIENT INFORMATION. COAL SAMPLES, WHICH ARE EXPECTED TO YIELD EQUIVALENT PRACTICAL PERFORMANCE BASED ON STANDARD CHARACTERIZATION, MAY EXHIBIT QUITE DIFFERENT COMBUSTION BEHAVIOUR.
THE PYROLYSIS AND REACTIVITY MEASUREMENT CONDITIONS SHOULD BOTH SIMULATE PRACTICAL BURNING CONDITIONS. THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED FROM THE NEW APPROACH IS EXPECTED TO BENEFIT THE JUDGEMENTS IN PRACTICAL COAL FIRING WITH REGARD TO THE SELECTION OF OPTIMAL CONDITIONS, E.G. AVOIDANCE OF MUCH UNBURNT CARBON IN ASHES. A MAIN OBJECTIVE IS TO DEMONSTRATE THE USEFULNESS OF THE PROPOSED CONCEPTS. THE POSSIBLE DEVELOPMENT OF A ROUTINE METHOD WILL CONSTITUTE PART OF THE PRACTICAL UTILIZATION.
IF THE OUTCOME IS SUCCESSFUL, IT WILL BE POSSIBLE FOR POWER STATIONS AND INDUSTRIES, USING COAL FOR HEATING TO APPLY THE METHOD WHEN COAL IS PROCURED AND USED. THE METHOD WILL PRIMARLY BE OF INTEREST FOR PRACTICLE BURNING WITH PULVERIZED FUEL AND CYCLONE BURNERS, BUT MAY ALSO GIVE USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT BURNING IN FLUIDIZED BEDS, SPREADER STOKERS ETC.
