THE IMPROVEMENT OF NON-SLAGGING CYCLONE COMBUSTORS FOR COAL BASED FUELS

Exploitable results

To avoid slagging and minimise emissions a cyclone combustor should operate with the first stage fuel rich. The internally generated centrifugal force suspends the burning coal particles in the near wall region where they devolatilise and then burn. A unique feature is the retention of ash in the system via, typically, 2 collector pockets. Modelling work included the investigation of a phenomenological model to predict global performance trends. The resulting package is felt to be a useful tool for designers. Overall this work has clearly demonstrated the potential of nonslagging cyclone combustors and construction of systems up to 6 MW can be considered as a next step. Elucidation of several, fundamental, underlying phenomena has been made together with the development of several very useful modelling packages.
