TRANSPORT AND SEPARATION OF TWO-PHASE (GAS-LIQUID) FLOW IN GEOTHERMAL APPLICATIONS.

Objective

TRANSMISSION OF GEOTHERMAL FLUIDS AS TWO-PHASE MIXTURES IS BEING USED ON AN INCREASING SCALE.AN IMPROVED UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE FLOW WILL PERMIT MORE ECONOMIC AND EFFICIENT PLANT DESIGN.THE WORK WILL ALSO BE APPLICABLE IN THE HYDROCARBON AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING INDUSTRIES.
In geothermal fields, the steam brine mixture can be transported from well heads to a central plant by a 2-phase flow pipeline. As indicated by field experiments, in this pipeline slug flow conditions are likely to occur for a wide range of vapour and brine flow rates. In the present work, the slug flow regime has been carefully analyzed in a small diameter (2 inch internal diameter, 17 m long), low pressure facility, which allowed measurements of the mean liquid hold up and of pressure losses.

A theoretical model has also been developed and tested with the experimental results.

The agreement between theory and experiments was good for the mean hold up and slug hold up measurements, while calculated pressure losses were systematically lower than the measured values. These deviations were also present in other data, but are hidden by an approximation made to the model.

Further work is under way in order to improve the flow description. In this work each slug is considered as a transient phenomenon as it is possible that fully developed intermittent flow only occurs in very long pipes, or, eventually, never occurs.
AN EXPERIMENTAL FACILITY WILL BE BUILT WITH A 20M TEST SECTION OF ADJUSTABLE INCLINATION.PIPES,VALVES AND OTHER FITTINGS CAN BE INCLUDED FOR TEST PURPOSES,AND THE OBJECTIVE WILL BE TO ESTABLISH THE CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE DIFFERENT REGIMES WHICH OCCUR IN TWO-PHASE FLOW.A SET OF DESIGN EQUATIONS WILL BE DERIVED WHICH SHOULD PERMIT PARAMETERS SUCH AS FLOW REGIME,PRESSURE DROPS AND FLUID HOLD-UP TO BE DERIVED FOR OPERATING PLANT.

THE WORK WILL BE PERFORMED IN PARALLEL WITH FIELD EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT BY ENEL AT CESANO (NORTH OF ROME) AND WITH A LARGE-SCALE LABORATORY PROJECT TO BE CARRIED OUT BY SNAMPROGETTI AND AGIP AT FANO.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
