STIMULATION OF DRY WELLS.

Objective

TO STIMULATE LOW PRODUCTIVITY WELLS IN THE LATERA GEOTHERMAL FIELD.
Stimulation operations have been carried out on 4 wells in 2 geothermal areas. The increased costs in deep well exploitation has necessitated the development of methodologies aimed at increasing well productivity or drilling success.

8 stimulation jobs have been performed on the wells of Latera geothermal field and 4 of them were successful. The stimulation operations were planned for the 2 low production wells L10 and L4. In the case of well L10, which produces from a siliceous rock formation, a series of acid attack laboratory tests were performed to select the most suitable acid composition. Unfortunately stimulation was not possible in this well due to casing collapse during workover operations. Stimulation in well L4, with the injection of the hydrogen chloride solution at 2 different depths, was fairly successful. In this case skin effect was not positive and stimulation led to an increase of about 30% in the flow rate estimated at a well head pressure of 10 bar with consequent increase in the electric generating capacity from 3.5 to 4.5 MWe.
DESCRIPTION:

THE LATERA FIELD TAPS A WATER-DOMINATED GEOTHERMAL RESERVOIR WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE RANGE 190-230'C. THE RESERVOIR IS IN A FRACTURE CARBONATE FORMATION AND A NUMBER OF THE EXISTING WELLS ARE DRY OR OF LOW PRODUCTIVITY. THE AIM IS TO STIMULATE FRACTURES IN LOW PRODUCTIVITY WELLS BY ACIDIZING IN ORDER TO IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY OR INJECTIVITY.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
