Objective
THE INVESTIGATION IS CONCERNED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MULTI-TRACER GAS SYSTEM FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF INTERZONAL AIR FLOWS IN BUILDINGS.
VERY LITTLE DATA EXISTS ON THE SUBJECT OF INTER-ZONAL AIRFLOWS ARISING FROM TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIALS IN PASSIVE SOLAR BUILDINGS. THIS IS DESPITE THE IMPORTANCE OF AIR MOVEMENT IN THE TRANSPORT OF HEAT WITHIN SUCH BUILDINGS. IN PASSIVE SOLAR BUILDINGS TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES ARE OFTEN DUE TO DIFFERENTIAL SOLAR HEATING BETWEEN THE NORTH AND SOUTH SIDES OF THE BUILDING. RELIABLE GUIDELINES WILL ALLOW THE DESIGNER TO ESTIMATE AIRFLOWS UNDER DIFFERENT CONDITIONS; MAXIMISING USEFUL GAINS AND MINIMISING OVERHEATING.
THIS ABSTRACT DESCRIBES:
1)DEVELOPMENT OF A PORTABLE MULTI TRACER-GAS SYSTEM FOR MEASURING INTER-ZONAL AIR FLOWS RATES AND INFILTRATION RATES IN UP TO FOUR ZONES. THE SYSTEM COMPRISES RELEASE AND SAMPLING EQUIPMENT FOR PERFLOUROCARBON TRACER GASES AND AN ELECTRON CAPTURE DETECTOR (ECD) FOR ANALYSIS. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SUCH A SYSTEM ARE DISCUSSED.
2) ITS DEPLOYEMENT IN A NUMBER OF HOUSES WITHIN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY AND UNDER CONTROLLED CONDITIONS IN A MULTI-ZONE TEST CHAMBER. THE EFFECT OF GEOMETRY AND TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE ARE INVESTIGATED.
3) A COMPARISON BETWEEN SIMPLE THEORY DESCRIBING BUOYANCY DRIVEN AIRFLOWS, ESP THE EUROPEAN REFERENCE MODEL FOR PASSIVE SOLAR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND MEASURED RESULTS. SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS ARE MADE.
4)GUIDELINES FOR ESTIMATING INTER-ZONAL FLOWRATES, INCLUDING NEW VALUES FOR EMPIRICALLY DERIVED COEFFICIENTS AND GUIDANCE AS TO THEIR APPLICATION.
