BETTER SULFIDE CATALYSTS OPTIMISED ACTIVE PHASE-SUPPORT INTERACTION.

Objective

THE AIM IS TO DEVELOP NEW SUPPORTED NI/CO/MO TYPE CATALYSTS FOR DIRECT LIQUEFACTION OF COAL.
The catalytic reactions involved in the hydrotreating of heavy oils or in coal liquefaction can be improved in 2 ways. Better catalysts can be developed, with improved activity, selectivity and stability, or cheap, disposable catalysts, exhibiting a reasonable performance, can be designed.

Catalysts based on cobalt, nickel, molybdenum and tungsten have been studied and it has been shown that those with lower active phase support interactions exhibit higher hydrodesulphurisation (HDS) activities.

The structure and the detailed chemistry of the active phases have been investigated, using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), for catalysts based on alumina, silica and carbon.
THE PROJECT WILL INVOLVE R&D ON CATALYST PREPARATION, A PROGRAMME ON CATALYST CHARACTERISATION AND A SERIES OF CATALYTIC ACTIVITY TESTS FOR REACTIONS OF INTEREST TO COAL LIQUEFACTION USING MODEL COMPOUNDS.
THE CATALYST PREPARATION WORK WILL CONCENTRATE ON THE USE OF NOVEL SUPPORTS AND ON PREPARATION PROCEDURES. EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON CARBON COVERED ALUMINA SUPPORTS WITH SOME WORK ON SILICON AND MODIFIED ALUMINA. IMPROVEMENTS TO BE SOUGHT IN PREPARATION PROCEDURES WILL BE CONCERNED WITH THE DEPOSITION OF TRANSITION METALS ON A CARBON SURFACE, DRYING AND SULPHIDING.
THE PROGRAMME ON CATALYST CHARACTERISATION WILL INVOLVE CATALYST STRUCTURE STUDIES IN THE OXIDE AND SULPHIDE STATES, STUDIES OF SULPHIDE PHASE DISPERSION AND REACTIVITY MEASUREMENTS FOR REDUCTION AND SULPHIDATION.
CATALYTIC ACTIVITY MEASUREMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED IN FLOW AND BATCH REACTORS AT 1-100 ATMOSPHERES. APPROPRIATE MODEL COMPOUNDS WILL BE SUBJECTED TO DESULPHURISATION HYDREODENITROGENATION, HYDRODEOXYGENATION, HYDRODEMETALLISATION, AND HYDROCRACKING IN THE PRESENCE OF PROMISING CATALYST FORMULATIONS USING MAINLY MO/CO/NI SULPHIDES AS ACTIVE PHASES. ACTIVE COLLABORATION INVOLVING EXCHANGE OF CATALYSTS IS PLANNED WITH OTHER CONTRACTORS IN THE FIELD, ESPECIALLY WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF KARLSRUHE AND ESCUELA OF BILBAO. TESTS ARE ALSO PLANNED AT AKZO CHEMIE BV.

STATE OF ADVANCEMENT:
TWO PROGRESS REPORTS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED. THE NECESSARY PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT HAVE BEEN ALLOCATED. THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT. A MEETING WITH OTHER COLLABORATING GROUPS FROM EINDHOVEN, KARLSRUHE, VILLEURBANNE, MADRID AND BILBAO (CONTRACTS EN3V000900, EN3V001000, EN3V001100, EN3V003100) WAS HOLD IN AMSTERDAM IN OCTOBER 5 AND 6, 1987.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
