Objective
DEVELOPMENT AND SCREENING OF SELECTIVE, EFFICIENT AND STABLE CATALYSTS FOR CONVERSION OF SYNTHESIS GAS TO MIXED ALCOHOLS FOR USE AS OCTANE IMPROVERS.
It is to be expected that alcohols and mixed alcohols will become predecessors of hydrogen as important fuels for the near future, especially in countries with abundant natural gas and coal resources. Alcohols can be used as a medium for energy storage, as a domestic fuel and as a substitute for diesel and gasoline. They are energy carriers with high environmental potential, giving rise to low emissions of nitrogen oxides, polycyclic hydrocarbons and soot, good water solubility and minor long term effects on the atmosphere and soil.
The synthesis gas needed for the production of alcohols can relatively easily be obtained from fossil fuels like coal and brown coal and also by steam reforming of natural gas.
Research on catalysts for the production of alcohols from synthesis gas has included:
testing of several types of catalysts in Berty type reactors;
evaluation of the produced alcohols as fuel;
development of methods for the study of the accelerated deactivation of catalysts using micropulse reactors;
performance of potassium modified copper zinc oxide alumina catalysts for the production of methanol;
study of promoters;
synthesis and characterisation of catalysts;
optimisation of temperature programmed reduction procedures.
THE CONVERSION OF CLEAN, PRETREATED SYNTHESIS GAS CONTAINING H2, CO AND CO2 INTO MIXTURES OF METHANOL AND HIGHER ALCOHOLS (ENERGOLS) IS DETERMINED BY THE CATALYST USED IN THE SYNTHESIS REACTOR. TWO PROMISING CATALYTIC SYSTEMS ARE KNOWN TODAY: CU/ZNO/AL2O3 IMPREGNATED WITH POTASSIUM-CONTAINING COMPOUNDS AND CU/CO SUPPORT SYSTEM.
THIS PROJECT AIMS AT STUDYING ACTIVITY (EFFICIENCY), SELECTIVITY (PRODUCT QUALITY, YIELD AND PRODUCT RATIOS) AND STABILITY (LONG TERM BEHAVIOUR OF ACTIVITY AND SELECTIVITY). A FORCED AGING TEST PROCEDURE WILL BE DEVELOPED AND ADAPTED TO BE USABLE IN GENERAL FOR HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS.
- TU DELFT WILL PREPARE VARIOUS (CU/CO/...TYPE) CATALYSTS AND PERFORM TEXTURE AND SURFACE MEASUREMENTS.
- TU TWENTE WILL PREPARE VARIOUS CU/ZN...TYPE CATALYSTS AND PERFORM TEXTURE MEASUREMENTS AND SCREENING TESTS.
- TH CLAUSTHAL WILL TEST DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF THOSE CATALYSTS AND INVESTIGATE REACTION MECHANISMS.
- KFA JUELICH WILL PERFORM STABILITY AND SELECTIVITY TESTS IN A HIGH PRESSURE REACTOR.
