Objective
CONOCO STUDIES ON A ZINC HALIDE DIRECT COAL LIQUEFACTION PROCESS WILL BE REINVESTIGATED USING DIFFERENT EUROPEAN COALS RANKING FROM LIGNITES TO BITUMINOUS COALS. EFFORTS WILL BE CONCENTRATED IN THE PREPARATION OF THE COAL: SOLVENT MIXTURE (SOLVENT-MOLTEN SOLUTION OF ZNCL2), AND SEARCH FOR MATERIALS THAT WITHSTAND THE CORROSIVE NATURE OF MOLTEN ZNCL2.
THE WORK PROGRAMME IS SPLIT INTO TWO PARTS, SEPARATED BY A MILESTONE. THE FIRST PART IS DEALING WITH A BIBLIOGRAPHIC AND A PATENT ANALYSIS AS WELL AS A SELECTION OF MATERIALS THAT RESIST TO THE VERY CORROSIVE NATURE OF MOLTEN ZNCL2 AT OPERATING CONDITIONS.
IF THE FEASIBILITY OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN EXPERIMENTAL SET-UP IS PROVEN, PART TWO OF THE PROGRAMME WILL START WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF A BENCH SCALE EXPERIMENTAL FACILITY ALLOWING CONTINUOUS OPERATION.
THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK WILL INVESTIGATE:
- THE CORRELATION OF COAL RANK WITH YIELD AND QUALITY OF THE END PRODUCTS.
- THE EFFECTS OF OPERATING CONDITIONS AND CATALYST CONCENTRATION.
- REGENERATION OF CATALYST
- REMOVAL OF ASH, S AND N FROM RECOVERED CATALYST.
BITUMINOUS AND SUBBITUMINOUS COALS AND LIGNITES WILL BE USED. A MODEL OF THE REACTION KINETICS WILL BE DEVELOPED TO PREDICT THE BEHAVIOUR AT DIFFERENT OPERATING CONDITIONS.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
