Objective
THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS THE VALORISATION OF COAL BY CHEMICAL CONVERSION OF SYNGAS INTO HIGH GRADE LIQUID FUELS WITH SPECIAL ADVANTAGES REFERRING TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION (LOW SULPHUR CONTENT, HIGH OCTANE OR CETANE NUMBERS, AND HIGH CALORIFIC VALUE) AS WELL AS THE PRODUCTION OF HIGH GRADE CHEMICAL FEED STOCK FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF FINE CHEMICALS.
THIS INVESTIGATION STARTS FROM SYNGAS (CO + H2), AS IT CAN BE PRODUCED BY GASIFICATION OF COAL. THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME CONSISTS IN THE LIQUEFACTION OF SYNGAS BY HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS IN A MODIFIED FISCHER-TROPSCH SYNTHESIS, AND IT CONCENTRATES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGHLY SELECTIVE CATALYSTS WITH SPECIAL UTILIZATION OF RECENTLY DEVELOPED NEW TYPES OF ZEOLITES.
THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME INCLUDES THE VARIATION OF METHODS FOR CATALYST PREPARATION, BASED ON FE, CO, AND MN, DOPED BY SPECIAL PROMOTERS, AND COMBINED WITH RECENTLY DEVELOPED ZEOLITES LIKE T, L, ZSM E.G. 11 TO 48, ET ALII.
CATALYST SCREENING IN FIXED BED OPERATION AT MEDIUM PRESSURE IN A BENCH SCALE EQUIPMENT WILL BE FOLLOWED BY TEST RUNS IN A SLURRY REACTOR (BUBBLE COLUMN) AT NORMAL AND HIGH PRESSURE, BECAUSE LIQUID PHASE OPERATION SEEMS TO BE THE MOST PROMISING METHOD IN ORDER TO REALIZE HIGH SELECTIVITY AND FLEXIBILITY.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
