Objective
THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO OBTAIN CORRELATION BETWEEN THE VITRINITE CONTENT OF LIGNITES AND THEIR BEHAVIOUR IN DIRECT LIQUEFACTION AND TO DETERMINE THE PERFORMANCE OF LIQUIDS FROM LIGNITE LIQUEFACTION FOR TRANSPORTATION FUELS.
FOUR SPANISH LIGNITES WITH DIFFERENT VITRINITE CONTENT WILL BE TESTED FOR DIRECT LIQUEFACTION IN A MICRO0REACTOR AT 400 CELSIUS DEGREES, 70 BAR HYDROGEN PRESSURE AND TETRALINE AS SOLVENT. VITRINITE FROM THESE LIGNITES WILL BE ISOLATED AND TESTED FOR DIRECT LIQUEFACTION UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS. CORRELATIONS BETWEEN MACERAL COMPOSITION AND THE LIGNITE BEHAVIOUR IN DIRECT LIQUEFACTION WILL BE ESTABLISHED.
TWO-STAGE LIQUEFACTION WILL BE CARRIED OUT WITH ONE LIGNITE OF THOSE PREVIOUSLY USED THAT WILL BE CHOSEN BECAUSE OF THEIR REACTIVITY IN DIRECT LIQUEFACTION OR BECAUSE OF THE QUALITY OF THE LIQUIDS FROM DIRECT LIQUEFACTION.
FIRST STAGE LIGNITE LIQUEFACTION WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN A CONTINUOUS UNIT AT UNIVERSITAET CLAUSTHAL UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS PREVIOUSLY USED BUTWITH ANTHRACENE OIL AS SOLVENT. SECOND STAGE LIGNITE LIQUEFACTION WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN ZARAGOZA (SPAIN) IN A CONTINUOUS HYDROTREATING UNIT THAT WILL BE BUILT.
MIDDLE DISTILLATES FROM LIQUIDS OBTAINED IN THE HYDROTREATING UNIT WILL BE UPGRADED BY HYDROTREATING AND BY HYDROCRACKING DEPENDING ON THEIR NATURE AND THEIR PERFORMANCE AS JET FUEL, HEATING OR DIESEL FUEL WILL BE CHARACTERIZED.
HYDROTREATING OPERATION WILL BE EVALUATED FOR: N, S, O REMOVAL AND H/C RATIO.
LIQUIDS FROM DIRECT LIQUEFACTION AND HYDROTREATING WILL BE CHARACTERIZED BY: ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS, SIMULATED DISTILLATION BY G.C. 13 C RMN, 13 H RMN AND MASS SPECTROMETRY.
LIQUIDS FROM UPGRADING OPERATION WILL BE TESTED FOR CALORIFIC VALUE, GRAVIRY FLASH POINT AND VISCOSITY.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
