Objective
THE PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT IS TO DESIGN, DEVELOP AND TEST A CONTROL SYSTEM FOR A FIXED PITCH WIND TURBINE DRIVING A SELF EXCITED INDUCTION GENERATOR IN STAND ALONE MODE. THE VOLTAGE OF THE SYSTEM WILL BE CONTROLLED BY VARYING THE EFFECTIVE CAPACITANCE APPLIED AT THE TERMINALS OF THE GENERATOR. THE FREQUENCY OF THE SYSTEM WILL BE CONTROLLED BY VARYING THE APPLIED LOAD BOTH IN A DUMP LOAD AND IN A DISTRIBUTED LOAD.
IN THE YEAR TO THE END OF DECEMBER 1988 THE FOLLOWING PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE :
(1) A TEST RIG HAS BEEN CONSTRUCTED IN THE LABORATORY WITH A VARIABLE SPEED D.C. MOTOR DRIVE USED TO REPRESENT THE WIND TURBINE.
(2) A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT ON THE RIG IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE SELF EXCITED INDUCTION GENERATOR UNDER DIFFERENT CONDITIONS OF LOAD, SPEED AND EXCITATION CAPACITANCE. THESE RESULTS SHOW GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THOSE PREDICTED EARLIER BY A COMPUTER ANALYSIS.
(3) THE DETAILED DESIGN OF THE COMPLETE SYSTEM (AS SHOWN BELOW IN SCHEMATIC FORM) HAS BEEN COMPLETED. THE CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING OF THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS ARE UNDER WAY.
(4) REFURBISHMENT WORK ON THE JACOBS WIND TURBINE TO BE USED DURING THE TEST PHASE OF THE PROJECT IS ALSO UNDER WAY.
THE LABORATORY TESTING OF THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS IS EXPECTED TO BE FINISHED BY JUNE 1989 TO BE FOLLOWED BY TESTING ON THE JACOBS WIND TURBINE IN THE LATTER HALF OF THE YEAR.
