Objective
THE SCOPE OF THE CONTRACT IS TO CARRY OUT A PENETRATION STUDY FOR WIND ENERGY IN THE GENERATING SYSTEM OF GREECE. THIS "SYSTEM STUDY" SHALL BE CARRIED OUT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE "GUIDELINES FOR SYSTEM STUDIES UNDER EC WIND POWER PENETRATION STUDY, JANUARY 1987".
The technical and economic value of wind energy to the interconnected Greek power system at the year 2000, was assessed. The study focused on the assessment of wind energy potential, the evaluation of the maximum economic wind energy penetration level and the identification of major technical aspects of wind power implementation. This work will serve as background information for the establishment of wind energy policy within the European Community, and as a strategical tool for electrical utilities and wind turbine manufacturers.
Long term experimental evaluation of the wind potential on the Cyclades islands shows extremely favourable wind conditions allowing high wind turbine (WT) utilisation factors of the order of 4000 hours on an annual basis. The Hellenic wind atlas is used as a guideline for experimental verification of specific wind farm sites.
ACCORDING TO THE GUIDELINES THE RESEARCH INCLUDES CONSIDERATIONS CONCERNING THE FOLLOWING SUBJECTS :
- ENERGY CREDIT
- CAPACITY CREDIT
- CONTROL PROBLEMS
- ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
- VOLTAGE CONTROL AND REACTIVE POWER.
