Objective
THE CONTRACT COMPRISES A STUDY OF THE WIND ENERGY R&D IN EUROPE, SPECIFICALLY WITH REFERENCE TO THE COMMISSION PROGRAMME.
The prospects for wind energy technology as a competitive method of electricity generation in the centralized European grids have been evaluated. The annual energy production in Gigawatt hours per year has been calculated from power curves, assuming a standard Weibul distribution and a terrain class 1 windshear. The higher ELSAM tower and generator capacity give rather high energy gains as indicated by the energy production rate per square metre of swept area. Preliminary figures from operation of the ELSAM turbine indicate a production rate about 10% higher than the above theoretical figures. This depends on the influence of dirt on the blades.
THE FOLLOWING SUBJECTS ARE BEING DEALT WITH:
A- ASSESSMENT OF COST OF WIND TURBINES
B- SUMMARY OF THE ACTION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MEDIUM-SIZE MACHINES
C- DEVELOPMENT OF THE MEASUREMENT PROGRAMME FOR THE WEGA TURBINES
D- ANALYSIS OF CONSTRUCTION STRATEGICS OF THE WEGA TURBINES
E- COMPARISON BETWEEN EUROPEAN AND OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT
F- EVALUATION OF ACTIONS FOR CONSIDERATION IN THE 4TH PROGRAMME.
