Design and off-design optimisation of highly loaded industrial gas turbine stages (DAIGTS)

Objective

Objectives and problems to be solved:
Reduction of greenhouse gases in accordance with the Kyoto objective will be supported by the development of high efficiency industrial gas turbines. Improvements of 4% in turbine efficiency are targeted through better design rules and methodologies, which will have an impact of 3% in overall engine thermal efficiency and move the small-medium gas turbine towards the 35% target. Improved capability to burn fuels with a large range of LCV and Dry Low Emissions systems puts additional duties on the turbine, which will be investigated, to ensure efficient, reliable and cost effective operation. Description of work: The work supports an area of turbine aerodynamics that is of particular interest to industrial gas turbines. Improvements to current performance of industrial turbine stages are made through the study of data from existing experimental facilities, and incorporation of know-how into new improved methods. Evaluation of key loss generation areas in highly loaded industrial turbines is carried out at design and off design conditions, including the effects of cooling and flow-path geometric features. Generation of improved methods for the prediction of turbine component characteristics will be achieved through the acquisition of improved experimental data acquired from the partner's existing rigs, and complementary CFD studies. The work supports the development of aeromechanical tools appropriate for highly loaded Industrial Gas Turbines. Blade loading is increasing in order to reduce parts count and hence cost. It is essential that this is done whilst retaining engine integrity in order to achieve the availability and reliability targets requested in the ENERGIE Work Programme. The work will supply experimental data at representative engine conditions, on the unsteady response of a vibrating blades, for the validation of the partners codes. Expected Results and Exploitation Plans: A key deliverable is the improved capability for the European industry to design and make efficient and reliable Industrial Gas Turbines that are competitive in a global market. An 8% reduction in fuel burn and associated emissions would result from the improved design rules. The improved prediction of characteristics will reduce development time and enable greater fuel flexibility. Component integrity will be maintained whilst operating at the more demanding conditions. The application of new markets such as distributed power and the increasing move towards gas turbines for transport applications both land and marine will be influenced directly by the successful implementation of the results of this programme

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
