Objective
The proposed research aims to investigate the novel hybrid solar collector/CHP system intended for use in buildings to provide heating and electricity generation. The proposed system will be driven by both solar energy and natural gas to provide continuous operation during periods of low insulation or at night. The proposed CHP system is based on the integration of a heat-pipe solar collector, burner/combustion chamber and micro-turbine in one unit and utilisation of environmentally friendly working fluid. The proposed system would eliminate the need for separate heat transfer circuits/heat exchangers thus allow heat transfer to be carried out more effectively and reduce the size, weight and cost of the CHP system. The research will involve computer modelling, laboratory test and field monitoring. The proposed system would benefit the EU CHP and HVtC industries as well as building services companies and architectural practices.
