Objective
Application is made for assistance in preparing a Step 2 proposal aimed at developing small-scale 'total' energy generation systems for European markets by 2005. The target development will exploit advances in gas conditioning, filtration and electro-chemistry to generate 'high-grade' energy, in the form of medium CV gas and electricity, from renewable carbohydrate feedstock (energy crops and agricultural wastes) and from selected domestic and commercial wastes. The main novel features of these generators, to be demonstrated during Step 2, are: 1. independently controllable generation rates for the main products so that arbitrarily variable demands for both can be met (up to the maximum capacity for each separately); 2. the elimination of all major moving parts; 3. generation efficiencies of over 50% for electricity and over 90% for medium CV gas, these efficiencies rising as load decreases. The final commercial package will be competitive with fossil-fired equivalents.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
