New battery for an automated people mover

Objective

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) are driver-ess vehicles. They are mostly used to transport cargo in a warehouse, or from a storage room to processing departments. Usually, they are electrically driven, fed by a battery pack. A relatively new application is to use AGV technology for people movers, which are typically small vans. This project is proposed to eventually develop and demonstrate an automated people mover (APM) for 8- 12 people to be used at airports and other shuttle services with busy traffic.

This project focuses on the development of a new battery based on the Zebra battery technology, as the current standard lead acid batteries and NiCd batteries used in AGV's have many disadvantages, such as a low specific energy, a limited life, hi maintenance costs and unreliable performance in severe outdoors conditions.
