Advanced pem fuel cells (APOLLON)

Objective

The main objectives of the present proposal is the development and construction of Advance polymeric fuel cells which will be able to operate under H2 and/or methanol fuels, aiming to thermodynamic efficiencies exceeding 50% with power densities of the order of 1W/cm2 and significantly reduced manufacturing cost of the membrane electrodes assembly.
Therefore we propose the development of
(i) new more active and cost effective electrode materials which can be tolerant to CO poisoning (0.5-1% CO) with applications in low temperature fuel cells (70-80oC for mobile applications) and
(ii) the use of new generation cheap polymeric electrolyte membranes which permit the cell operation at temperatures above 150oC.
This medium temperature fuel cell is proposed for stationary applications.
