Objective
The use of portable power in Europe and worldwide has grown dramatically in recent years and continues to do so. Also, the overall increased demand for electrical power, estimated at >10%/year in the US (similar increases have been foreseen in Europe), has resulted in a corresponding increased demand for Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems. This market is currently dominated by batteries, and petrol-or diesel-fuelled generators that pollute excessively through their high emission levels and their noise. The aim of the project is thus to design, develop, construct and test a 1 kW Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) portable power generator for ambient temperature operation. The system will be designed for small, portable UPS systems, which has been identified one of the few areas where the currently high introduction price does not prohibit market penetration.
