Objective
Objectives and problems to be solved:
The objective of the NanoBatt project is to develop new materials, new synthetic routes, for novel Li batteries. The main technical problem is how to significantly increase the power density without compromising the rechargeability. Additional problem but not less important is to develop industrialized manufacturing techniques that can yield a low cost battery. The immediate application that needs to solve these problems is the EV. A Li-ion battery technology with such improved qualities is required to make the EV a popular and preferred by choice "green" vehicle, that does not use polluting metals as used in Lead Acid or NiCd batteries. Increasing the number of Electric Vehicles is the ultimate goal of this project, and main contribution to stop global pollution, for a better quality of life.
Description of the work:
In order to obtain high power density battery systems, it is important to increase the surface area of the electrodes, and this can be achieved by the use of active mass comprised of nano-particles. Sonochemistry has been proven a highly successful synthetic tool for the production of nanonic phases of transition metal oxides, lithiated transition metal oxides, and carbonaceous materials. Sonochemical methods are expected to be significantly less expensive for the production of Li battery materials than conventional ones based on high temperature syntheses. The project proposes to develop sonochemical methods for the production of nanonic active materials for Li batteries. In addition, the project will develop other inexpensive methods for the production of Li battery materials based on mechanosynthesis and melt spinning. The consortium comprises three research institutes, two industries & one end user. The project includes anode & cathode materials R&D, to be used with liquid electrolyte solutions and composite polymer electrolyte systems that will form stable interfaces with anodes & cathodes in Li batteries.
Expected Results and Exploitation Plans:
The final product of the project will be Li batteries elaborated as button laboratory cells. The consortium plans on developing new generations of rechargeable Li batteries active materials, that are improved in both production cost and power density, for battery manufacturing, The consortium anticipates that its development will promote the application of Li battery systems in electric vehicles, due to the above-anticipated advantages.
