Objective
To develop an instrument based on laser induced fluorescence (LIF) for highly sensitive measurements of OH/HO2 radical concentration-time profiles in the simulation chamber
The instrument to be developed will be used to analyze different chemical systems with variable VOC/NOx
ratios relevant to the regional and global troposphere. A major advantage of using the instrument in
combination with the simulation chamber facility is that the oxidation capacity of the troposphere can be tested
for different boundary conditions without the complication of meteorology.
The method will provide, for the first time, a direct observation of the OH concentration-time profiles together
with the oxidation rates of VOC species for simple systems and allow an assessment of the influence of the
addition of other species on the OH radical chain to be tested. It is also intended to investigate the influence
of aerosol particles on the radical chain.
It is expected that the methodology developed within the proposed project can be used to analyze the chemical
mechanisms also of complex reaction systems and that representative reduced mechanisms can be derived from
the experimental analysis of the OH radical chain.
The project will also provide a facility by which other instruments used for ambient radical measurements can
be tested and calibrated under atmospheric conditions.
