Cloud ice mountain experiment

Objective

To better understand the fate of the scavenged pollutants during the freezing of a

In the few numerical models which treat the ice phase in clouds and the associated chemical processes it is
assumed, e g., that when a drop freezes, all uptaken material is retained and incorporated into the crystal
structure. However, it is not known whether this is true or whether not part of the material is expelled,
redistributed or changed in any way during the freezing process.
Consequently, the proposed project will investigate this very fundamental question on the chemical behaviour
of mixed and ice phase clouds. This problem will be addressed during two joint field experiments in
supercooled (temperature below 0 C) clouds at the summit of a mountain station (Puy de Dtme, France) with
a horizontal wind tunnel as neither airplane measurements, nor measurements involving remote sensing
techniques are likely to yield a sufficient insight into the field of cloud ice chemistry. On the observational site,
the content of important trace gases (SO2, H2O2, NH3) and sulphate in liquid drops will be evaluated by
evaporating these drops in a CVI (=counterflow virtual impactor) and by measuring the released gas content
and the residual particles in the air. The same trace species will be sampled from a complementary interstitial
inlet that collects all particles below the lower size cut of the CVI (5mm). In a second step, the cloud drops will
be frozen prior to entering the CVI. The procedure of evaporation and analysis in the CVI will be repeated for
the frozen drops A comparison between the chemical characteristics of drops and ice particles and the additional
measurement of the trace gas concentrations in the ambient air will allow to determine the fate of the trace
constituents during the freezing process of a cloud. Process oriented models which are already developed will
accompany this field experiment.
The project is expected to provide new and general insights into the processes of multiphase chemistry in mixed
phase clouds. The new insights will enable us to design more realistic models for the physico-chemical processes
controlling the transport, transformation and depletion of chemically reactive compounds in clouds containing
the ice phase. This will result in a better understanding of the role of clouds on the mid-latitude environment,
meteorology, and climate. Furthermore, the project will result in an advance of experimental techniques for the
measurements of multiphase processes in clouds.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
