Summary: The quick look atlas is based upon the data of routine SYNOP stations. It gives an account of the spatial precipitation fields during each day of the period Aug. 95 to Oct. 95. The ground truth atlas is based on an order of magnitude more stations (more than 4000 locations of daily precipitation observations within the catchment of the Baltic Sea), plus a quality check and corrections of measurements. The analysis was done using Ordinary Block Kriging. The main part of the atlas shows 92 precipitation fields within the Baltic Sea drainage basin. For each precipitation field an error field was calculated. Further the atlas contains a couple of comparisons with earlier analyses as well as predictions from models (HIRLAM, REMO), demonstrating possibilities and limitations with using the precipitation atlas in model validation.
Summary: The regional reanalysis for the period Aug.95 to Oct. 95 is a delayed-mode data assimilation using a high resolution limited area NWP model. Comparing to an operational mode analysis, a reanalysis uses a more complete observational data set with longer cutoff time.. Consequently, regional reanalysis shares more desired features of the global-scale reanalysis in comparison to operational-model analyses.
