Objective
To develop and improve the analysis and accounting for the societal use of materials, in order to support policy development which protects the environment and aids resource conservation.
OBJECTIVES:
To develop and improve the analysis and accounting for the societal use of materials, in order to support policy development which protects the environment and aids resource conservation.
DESCRIPTION:
Methods for the analysis of the use of materials are developed which allow both an improvement in substance accounting techniques and by using statistical modelling techniques also "track" and explain these flows. Case studies on different aspects of regional materials accounting and management are an intrinsic part of the process and made in respect of:
i) materials such as the heavy metals and chlorine, etc;
ii) functions such as construction and nutrition;
iii) the urban use of materials;
iv) regional, national and EU level material flows and stocks including flows associated with agriculture.
The research allows the evaluation of the impact of changes in policy by using a combination of simulation and sensitivity analysis. In addition, a systematic comparison of results at local, national and European levels indicates the appropriate level of aggregation for policy purposes - the minimum acceptable level of resolution. The work in particular, seeks to throw light on the following issues:
i) the early recognition of future resource depletion and environmental loading problems;
ii) priority setting and the elaboration of measures to protect the environment, especially in urban areas;
iii) the description of the transition from filter "back-end" to "frontend" (integrated) approaches to the design of products and the delivery of services.
