Biogical markers of environmental contamination in marine ecosystems (phase2)

Objective

Researchers involved in marine environmental toxicology should answer four main important questions:
- What are the priority pollutants ?
- What are theri biogeochemical cycles (lnputs, distribution, degradation) ?
- What are the mechanisms of the perturbation affecting organisms living in contaminated ecosystems ?
- What is the meaning in term of whole ecosvstem perturbations and risk for human health ?
- How to assess an environmental pollution ?
The response of organisms to contamination involves the measurement of indicators of exposure or effect which permits early detetction of environmental pollution problems related to human activities. Biological markers are measurements at the molecular level in either wild populations from contaminated habitats or in organisms experimentally exposed to pollutants, that indicate whether they habe been exposed to toxic chemicals and the magnitude of this exposition.
Biological markers measured in wild anaimals can directly contribute to detecting, quantifving and understanding the significance of exposure to chemicals in the environment. These measurements in environmental species may also help to assess the potential for human exposure to environmental pollutants and for predicting the human health risks.
The key to an effective implementation of biomarker-based biomonitoring is the integration of the insights and the expertise of specialists in a number of technical; competences in a joint research study on environmental contamination. The number of participants should be a good compromise between a limited number of participants for an efficient management and a sufficient number of contributors for an overview of the research field investigated. Several tasks will be developped for these purposes :
- A better understanding of the relationship between the biogeochemical process conditionning organism exposure to pollutant, ad the response ot the biological pararneters measured,
- Development of new biomarkers and standardization and validation procedures o protocoles for existing biomarker measurements,
- Comparison of various reponses of a suite of biomarkers in sentinel species f sites exhibiting various qualitative and quantitative levels of contamination.
- Implementation of a biomonitoring programme to make statement on pollution contamination and environmental quality in selected marine sites.
For these purposes, experiments will be performed to establish dose-dependant relationships between exposure, biomarker responses and toxic effects in sentinel species . A number of field sites are selected : North Sea, Baltic Sea, Northwestern t Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocena. Ligurian Sea.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
